Before you read anything: a gnome barbarian sounds really fun and you should do it. I'm building a small barbarian myself (a halfling) and I like the idea of this tiny, angry powerhouse.
The biggest drawback of using a small race, in my opinion, is that weapon attacks with heavy weapons are always at disadvantage. It's not game breaking as using a versatile weapon, dual wielding, or sword&boarding are also very viable options. It also stinks that your most likely dump stat (INT) gets a racial boost. Your speed will also start at 25ft, but eventually increase at level 5 so it's not a big deal.
One of the barbarian's weaknesses is spell saves, so getting advantage (especially on WIS saves against spells) is a super useful racial trait to have.
I once made one. It was alot of fun and I used the backround noble. My DM at the time was allowing it due to the idea had never pop up before. He was a Noble, Gnome Barbarian. He was known as Arrogant, Angry, Aristocratic Arthur. No reget.
I played a kobold barbarian once, and that was amazing. Even though some races might not be built for certain classes, it can be fun to play a gnome barbarian or an Orc bard. I would highly suggest playing your gnome barbarian, even if it isn't totally min/maxed.
I've been playing a Forest Gnome Totem Barbarian. Rolled decent stats. 15, 15, 14, 13, 11, 10. Level 12 now. Sword and board. I'm the party's tank. Racial bonuses help protect from spells and charms. Outside of battle, I play him as a pragmatic intellectual who loves history, dragons, and the arcane, but loses himself to the thrill of battle. Still keeps to his Gnomish roots by playing tricks on the party. Use my Minor Illusion spell a lot to help with stealth.
Created a summonable Capybara mount in DndBeyond with the DM's permission. Mount's nothing fancy as I didn't want to give myself a huge advantage. Rarely summon it.
if you go rock gnome... use the tinker feature to make a mood sensing music box that will play soothing chamber music or death metal depending on... RAGE!!!!
also...this is a story arc...what if you use artificer's lore to identify and destroy... cyberdine systems in an effort take down skynet! Sarah Connors style!

I've seen nothing but fun come out of Gnome/Halfing Barbarians. 10/10 choice. I'll probably do the same in the future.
If you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death.
I have a Gnome fighter Gunslinger and I use him as if he was Rocket Racoon
Such a tiny angry man. Do it!
Got any ideas on what kind of voice he should have?
