His backstory is possibly a little overdone but here it is:
Grew up in the wilds alone without parents. Was taken into another goliath tribe and raised as one of their own. During his teenage years he became quite close with the Chief's daughter Ragnhild, and was banished from the tribe. The two would meet in secret, away from her tribe. His channels the might of his ancestors into his rage (explaining the ancestral archtype) and has taken it upon himself to protect nature from those that would destroy it. Ragnhild also shares the ideal of protecting nature (is a Druid / Cleric).
This was a character idea to try and make a barbarian based tank, he has great stats and can make use of Unarmored Defense. I didnt plan on giving him a shield though. I was thinking great weapon, but not a polearm.
I plan on multiclassing him into Paladin (Ancients) at some point later down the road. Im having difficulty finding the right feat for him but i have a list to choose from:
Grappler Great Weapon Master Martial Adept (Menacing / Parry) Mobile Sentinel Tough Weapon Mastery type Feat from UA Brawny Menacing
I was leaning on martial adept (menacing strike / parry) for more attacking options instead of the plain old melee weapon attack. What do others think?
Given the difficulties inherent in his childhood, tough seems to make the most sense story wise. Perhaps mobile, but classic training associated with martial adept, grappler, or sentinel just doesn't mesh with the lone wolf childhood story, at least in my opinion. Not to say it cannot be explained, somehow.
Love the multiclass first off, never thought of the mix.
Paladin Oath of Ancients definitely makes sense with the backstory and the protective nature.
I would agree with the maul over a great axe as you are more likely to get higher damage with 2d6 over 1d12 (not much but still)
Feat, I would take 'great weapon master' as combining that with 'reckless attacks' from the barbarian class makes it way more likely to hit and therefore gives you the higher damage scores. Though 'tough' or 'sentinel' are also great choices and compliment the character.
All personal opinions :)

ancients/ancestors says greataxe to me
good luck
Jesus Saves!... Everyone else takes damage.
I think i gave him a maul for right now, but am free to go with greataxe as well.
Some of these feats could be explained through knowledge that comes to him from the tribes spiritual ancestors. Iunno, feels a bit too convenient.
Also, thank you for the suggestion / opinion. It certainly helps.
