new player, just reached level 4 and was going to take dual wielding but read great weapon master might be the way to go? I already seem to miss a ridiculous amount of hits so taking a -5 to attack seems crazy. Any advise on which feats are best or if i should take the points increase instead would be greatly appreciated. I took bear totem at level 3 just in case that makes a difference.
How do you envision your character? If you really like the idea of a dual wielding barbarian, I say go for it. And if you go down this path, after you reach Barbarian level 5, I'd suggest taking 1 level in Fighter for the Two-Weapon fighting style.
When you say that you "seem to miss a ridiculous amount of hits", it suggests that you are probably not using your Reckless Attack feature very often. GWM is a fine choice at level 4, but only when combined with the advantage granted by your Reckless Attack feature. If you are wary of using Reckless Attack, then there are probably better choices for you at this level. I, for one, use Reckless Attack almost every turn, relying on my resistances and my high HP to keep me on my feet. It also draws fire away from my squishier allies by making me into a more tempting target.

And what is your STR score?
My strength is 16 so +3. Could it be worth taking level 1 in fighter at level 4? it would give me ability to wear heavy armour so get a 18 ac and could take defense as fighting style to get additional +1 to ac so 19ac. Then have second wind to be even more of a tank? So many options!!
Edit- tried adding 1st level fighter and it doesnt make me able to wear heavy armour so probably not worth it over a feat just yet.
Problem is our group only plays about once per month so its a long time between level ups so dont want to waste the opportunity.

I probably havent been using it enough. I only used it against the really tough single enemies. Should probably use it more.

If you want your barbarian to dual wield, I'd take 1 level in fighter for the Two Weapon fighting style only after getting 5 levels in barbarian. I say this because it is not worth delaying the level 4 Ability Score Increase and the level 5 Extra Attack.
You do not gain heavy armor proficiency when you multiclass fighter:

Multiclassing into Fighter does not give you proficiency in Heavy Armor. If you check Chapter 6 of the PHB, there is a "Multiclassing Proficiencies" table that will show you what proficiencies you get if you multiclass into it. Plus, most if not all of your Rage benefits require that you not be wearing heavy armor.
I definitely wouldn't multiclass now, Feats and ASI's are gained at class levels, not character levels. Multiclassing now would delay that first one.
If you're missing a lot of attacks, are you just rolling poorly, or is your DM throwing stuff at you with higher AC ratings than you'd expect at your level? In the immortal words of Travis Willingham in the Barbarian episode of Handbooker Helper, "Reckless Attack - because, f--- it" :) Seriously though, especially as a Bearbarian, Reckless Attack is your best friend. Your whole shtick is a bet that you can drain their HP faster than they can drain yours with you resisting everything. Obviously this depends on you having sufficient HP, so do NOT neglect your Con score! Plus, with good Con & Dex you can use your manly chest hair for armor :)

You do not gain heavy armor proficiency when you multiclass fighter:

Besides, you lose several barbarian features when you wear heavy armor.
Anyway, in your case, I'd decide how you envision your character first.
