I run a game for my two kids and one of the DMPCs that helps round out the party is my daughter's bear companion. She currently uses her claws and occasionally a bonus action bite attack. The claw attacks are d4+ Str and the bite is d6+ Str.
With the party at level 7 this is starting to feel a little anemic. I'm thinking about getting her training to improve the damage on her claw and bite attacks but wasn't sure where to pitch it. I could aim higher because the attacks are non-magical or try to be reasonable since its a supporting role.
So I'm wondering what sort of damage you find is typical for Barbarian at around this level?
I'm a bit confused...is it a bear companion or a barbarian?

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Well, if the bear is a barbarian, at level 5, she should be using her claws twice because barbs can multi-attack at level 5. Don't forget to let her reckless attack too, that should pump up the amount of times that the bear actually hits. If that still feels lack luster, give her some +1 claws.

Since the bear barbarian is a DMPC, have you considered reviewing the recently released rules for sidekicks? There is no barbarian, but there is a fighter, so you can use that as a baseline.

Both! Bearyl is functionally an awakened bear barbarian. She acts more like an animal companion though, due to being a bear.
