So I plan to create a bard. But the trouble is, what instrument to give them; I want a hurdy-gurdy, but I don't exactly know what instrument that'd classify as mostly xD
My group's GM doesn't do homebrew in our current campaign, so I want to know which instrument could be equivalent.
As a player I carry a lute in town, but my spellcasting focus is a wooden flute. I take a wooden flute IRL when I go camping.
In your situation I would want to do the same thing. I would carry a Hudry-Gurdy in town but use a wooden flute in the dungeon. Since you are not asking for a magical musical instrument, I don't see any reason not to just roll with it. But in the end, like everything else, just check with your DM.

Bit late to the party but the musical instruments in the Player's Handbook are just examples. If the DM's okay with it just use something like a dulcimer or bagpipes for size and cost.
If the DM's against you having a hurdy-gurdy (maybe they're too high tech for your DM's concept of the world or he was savaged by one as a child) but you want something with a similar musical role then try take bagpipes. You get the same type of drone sound (but you loose the hum) but you can also wear a kilt with nothing underneath and scare the English.

A hurdy-gurdy is more like a machine instrument you can ask your DM to flavor an instrument into one other wise pick from these:
D&D 5e Musical Instruments - 5e Backgrounds For D&D
Research what they look like and how they are played and pick which one will possibly match the Hurdy-Gurdy.
