i can’t decide what the best instrument of the bard is, so I figured I’d have other people decide for me! What’s your ranking of the instruments of the bard?
Edit: I meant the magical instruments of the bard. Just to clarify.
Depends on the Race in my opinion. After all what self respecting dwarven bard cant play the bagpipes.
Beyond that my personal favorites are the Lute and Lyre usually with a Shawm as my third.
I just meant by their abilities. I can ask my dm to change the instrument type as it doesn’t really matter. I’m playing a tiefling and I want a violin.
Its Really more of a flavor thing than a mechanical one. I suppose if your a valor bard who uses a shield your DM may be more of a stickler to what kind of instruments you can play in combat. However Its been my experience both as DM and player that most DMs will not penalize you over what instrument you choose.

I’m talking about the magic items named after the colleges of the bard. Like the cli lyre and doss lute.
I don't know about best, but my favorite is my character's Fochlucan Bandore. He's a Swords Bard/Swashbuckler and I like the many ways I can gain Advantage with the Bandore and qualify for Sneak Attack.

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
Our Swords Bard really likes her Lyre of Building. Using an action to cast Mending comes in handy sometimes. She has also made good use of Fabrication, Passwall, and Summon Construct, on occasion.

Behind every successful Warlock, there's an angry mob.
I know it's very rare but I adore the Anstruth harp. I think it's kinda fun and since it is more or less a flavor thing it just fits my play style and character so well.
What did you decided for at the end? I'm just curious :)

I chose anstruth in the end. I liked the healing properties and the druidy flair. Although instead of an anstruth harp we had it customized to an anstruth violin.

My current favorite instrument is the character themselves. Hamboning.

I'm partial to the cli lyre. The spell repertoire contains many which aren't in the bard list, so it adds versatility.
