I don't know how your DM allocated gp to start your campaign.
Bards usually get Leather Armor initially because they can't get the better AC 12 "Studded Leather" armor initially.
But, the best armor for a Bard is Elven Chain Shirt, which is a medium armor that doesn't require proficiency with medium armors. It allows a Bard to get to about AC 16 if they have a good dex. So, talk to your DM and see if they will permit you to go on some sort of quest for an Elven Chain Shirt.
Good luck. Bards are the Bomb!

Bards really need to play defensively, remember vicious mockery gives disadvantage to hit. Since most of your spells are at range try to stay behind allies or further than 30ft away from enemies. dissonant whispers can also force enemies to run away from you so they cant get close when their turn comes around. basically look for defensive spells.
as for armor your going to be looking at studded leather (45gp) (and eventually +1,2 magic studded leather). some subclasses or feats will get you access to better gear.
As for making money talk to your dm as different games have different rules. Bards should be able to preform or do a job. Finding valuables to sell is the main way to earn money.
i play a lvl 1 bard rn and i have 15gp
also if anyone knows how to get more gp then that would be helpful too (im justing starting out)
