Countercharm for bards is an underwhelming talent for the most part. I wanted to increase the utility of this ability so I am proposing in my setting to change it from:
At 6th level, you gain the ability to use musical notes or words of power to disrupt mind-influencing effects. As an action, you can start a performance that lasts until the end of your next turn. During that time, you and any friendly creatures within 30 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed. A creature must be able to hear you to gain this benefit. The performance ends early if you are incapacitated or silenced or if you voluntarily end it (no action required).

As an action, you can start a performance that lasts for 1 minute or as long as you maintain concetration on this effect. During that time, you and any friendly creatures within 30 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed. A creature must be able to hear you to gain this benefit. In addition, you can use use your action to end the frightened or charmed condition on one creature. This ability can be used proficiency bonus times per day.
I think this still gives overall intial defense for when you suspect that enemy will try and use these effects on your group. You can mainatin much like a spell effect but can also reach out and remove this effect from one ally a round, slowly returning all affected back into fighting form. Thoughts? Too weak still?
I think there shouldn’t be a time limit or you have to use an action. It would be a more viable option if it were to be a reaction ability. It could have a use limitation like proficiency or charisma, but there are much stronger counters to these effects, like paladin’s aura, the limitation may or may not be necessary. But this can’t continue to be an action because the DM can always wait for the counter charm to run out then use the charm effect and from the player’s side why waist an action if you could actually do something.

I think changing it to a reaction would make it a lot more useable.
