Hey, I am fairly new to D&D, and created a Tiefling Bard. I am at level 4 currently, and am loving the heavy metal fire theme I have going on. My character is a little more edgy, but in the way that he just wants to protect his friends at any cost. I would love to continue taking bard levels, but it feels like my character (story wise) is leaning naturally into making a deal with some evil entity to give him powers to protect his friends. With that being said, when should I venture into warlock classes, and how far should I go? My first thoughts are wait until level 6, after I get Additional Magical Secrets (Lore Bard), and take 3 levels of Fiend/Tome Warlock (Eldrich Blast and Firebolt as cantrips). Would that work? Or should I go a different route?
Edit: I am considering Firebolt for more thematic reasons than practical reasons. I have Flames of Phlegethos, so fire skills are a bit more powerful, and Warlock level 3 is the only way outside of Magical Secrets that I think I will get it.
When you take level 1 warlock you can immediately get the 2 cantrips on offer from Warlock. No need to wait until level 3. In your position I would wait until after level 5 or 6 bard. Level 5 gets you the jump to level 3 spells which are really critical. Level 6 would get you your magical secrets. If you take the warlock level at level 5 (4/1 split) you will have two beams of Eldritch Blast which is nice but since you can't stack spell casting levels with warlock you still won't have 3rd level slots.
So yeah wait until 5th or 6th. I also think font of inspiration at bard 5th is also worth waiting on warlock. As for flames of phlegethos. I would recommend picking up flaming sphere with your magical secrets. It is a nice toy to play with your bonus action and would trigger your feat every turn. Also is a nice thing to upcast.
Thank you! I will have to research Flaming Sphere, I haven't heard of it before. Looks like it will be best to take Warlock levels when we move to the next book (current one ends at level 6).
