hi I'm new to dnd! I've decided for the first campaign that i wanted to be a changeling bard i thought the background of a character like that would be quite fun to explore. i was wondering what college i should play as for my character and do you have any interesting ideas on how this could benefit me within my role as a changeling?
I'm currently playing a changeling college of eloquence bard. College of Eloquence silver tongue feature is very strong for changelings (basically making all of our persuasion and deception checks succeed). College of Eloquence is a strong subclass anyways with all of its features.
It plays as a utility/support & face of the party. I'd recommend giving it a try if that appeals to you.
College of Eloquence paired with Changeling is basically playing on Easy Mode. If you pair it with the Actor feat, you could be literally in the same room as the person you're impersonating, and easily convince the majority of NPCs that you're the "real" person and the other guy is an impostor.
Eloquences is the most powerful synergy with the Changeling's abilities. By L3, your minimum skill check for both Deception and Persuasion is 17 (assuming Standard Array ability scores)
If you want to spice it up a bit, you could include multiclassing...
If you take L1 as a Rogue, then take your next 4 levels in Eloquence Bard, you net several more skill proficiencies, a couple more Expertises, and even Thieves' Tools and Thieves Cant proficiency. And at L5, you have a minimum result on both Deception and Persuation of 20, in addition to many other versatile abilities. If after the 4 levels of Bard, you might consider switching over to Rogue for some killer sneak attacks on enemies (possibly a good use of the Assassin subclass, though my personal favorite is the Swashbuckler, which is much more versatile than the Assassin). Of course, sticking with Bard will be really good if you decide to go full caster instead of switching to more melee.
