I am starting a campaign at level 3 and want to play a multiclass paladin/swords bard. I was thinking Paladin 2/Bard X but curious when it would be best to take the levels of paladin. Initially thinking start w paladin then go full bard from there but it would keep me from getting extra attack until level 8. Thoughts on approach or other ways to mitigate loss of damage potential?
I would suggest to go with high elf if you want to mitigate not having extra attack by the time everyone else does, so you can start off with booming blade. In my opinion, it'd be best to start with one level, then go swords bard until you unlock extra attack, then go for your second level of paladin, then back to bard the rest of the way.
Personally I'd go bard 6 for extra attack and the other bard benefits, then grab 2 levels of paladin from there. However as others have mentioned if you really want to start paladin finding a way to get the booming blade or greenflame blade cantrip can partially make up for your lack of extra attack.
Awesome, thanks all! I think what I am going to do is go Paladin 2/Bard 1 - 6 until I pick up the extra attack. I am going to go Variant Human and pick up Polearm Master and use a spear and shield with the Dueling fighting style.
I expect by levels 6 and 7 I'll really be wanting that extra attack but hopefully my spellcasting, smites, and flourishes, coupled with the BA PAM attack, will offset that. I'll report back on how the play style goes
