Hi. I am joining as a level 10 Lore Bard in a ongoing campaign and haven't play DnD for a long time and never a bard. Looking for advice on optimising my spell list. Wondering if I have overdone it with the illusion and mind effecting spells. My DM said the group is lacking AoE damage. I think I will enjoy a lot of battlefield control such as Hypnotic patter & Wall of Force as well as some fun with illusions.
Advice would be appreciated.
Level 10 Bard - Lore
Cantrips: (3/4)
Viscious Mockery (2d4)
Mage hand
Minor illusion
Courage OR Light ?
Known Spell 14
1st Level slots (4/4)
Dissonant Whispers - single target 3d6 psych damage, move away - wis save
Tasha`s hideous laughter - wis save + creature min int score 4
Also remember that Cutting Words is not a spell but acts like a spell cast as a reaction. Cutting words, by itself, is as powerful as any spell I can think of at level 3 on the Bard List. Now, I didn't have all these spells at one time, because this is more spells than you can have. But these are the spells I adopted at one point or another. I can't say enough for the RP benefits of Prestidigitation. I admit, Mage Hand should be pretty awesome, but Prestidigitation is a core part of my Bard build. Anyway, let me list the bard abilities, which are similar to spell abilities ...
Inspiration - Song of Rest - Cutting Words - Font of Inspiration - Countercharm - Magical Secrets
Song of Rest just allows your party members to regain HP for free during a Short Rest if they spend a HD to heal themselves.
Cutting Words is almost like a Shield Spell you can cast once per round. This is one reason you want a Charisma = 20 so you have 5 of these babies to give out.
Font of Inspiration is the double bonus round of Bardic Beauty, because now you regain your Bardic Inspiration at each Short Rest instead of each long rest. Now you might often have 15 Cutting Words to give out per day.
Also remember that a Bards Jack of All Trades gives bonus to things like Initiative Checks. It also helps when casting Counterspell against spells over level 3.
I hope there is something in here that sparks your interest. Good luck and enjoy playing a Lore Bard.

I don't know how the campaign will go. I think a good mixture of combat and RP.
I can only share the spell list I was using for my 8th level Lore Bard ...
Cantrips: Prestidigitation, Mending, Vicious Mockery
1st: Bane, Charm Person, Dissonant Whispers, Healing Word
2nd: Heat Metal, Phantasmal Force, Invisibility, Silence
3rd: Dispel Magic, Tiny Hut, Sending
4th: Dimension Door, Polymorph
6th Level Magic Secrets: Counterspell, Thunderstep
