So I’m making a backup character in case my druid kicks the bucket lol. I’m thinking of playing a bard next but i’d like to be more useful on the field too? pretty much be able to defend myself in case i’m not near my party members and they don’t have to worry about babying the bard or making sure the squishy one doesn’t flatline. i was thinking the college of valor but i’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts and ideas on how you’d build a saytr bard? or how you could multi class one too?
-Edit: here is more context on the campaign, ruleset wise we kind of have 5e and 1e mixed so it’s bit homebrewed, necrotic heals 3 out of 5 of our party. My druid is essentially a pocket healer and while I love her i do admit i’d like to maybe be less spell heavy next time i have a character built lol, so i was thinking fighter with some bard levels so i can maybe do healing spells without being a full blown healer? i don’t know how to word it right i apologize
College of Valor is the classic melee combat bard option. It has the virtue of being simple and straightforward, and not requiring you to keep track of much of anything beyond the base Bard class stuff. As such, it's a good option for people who are new to the game (or just new to Bards).
It's also worth taking a look at the new College of Dance subclass, which gives the Bard some improved durability and mobility as well as some nice unarmed combat options.
You can kind of look at Valor as being a Bard who wishes they were a Fighter, and Dance as a Bard who wishes they were a Monk.
ooooo thank you! yeah i’m very new to the whole bard scene, i played dnd as a preteen then never found a group, played baldurs gate, and now i have a group so my range of knowledge on classes are still new
