I am about to play a bard (1st time D&D player) and I am looking for media (Movies, TV, books, comics, etc) about bards to see how best to role-play my character.
So far I have based a good amount on Kubo and the Two Strings and the gnome bard from Critical Role. However I'd welcome any addition suggestions I can look up :)
It really depends on what College you want to go and what style you want to have. You can go Mariachi style Valor bard (imagine A. Banderas from Desperado), you can go completely balls-to-the-wall style of Scanlan from CR (as you mentioned).
I get that this is a little bit of a late to the table response but just in case anyone else runs across this thread...
Tulio and Miguel from El Dorado Spies Like Us with Chevy Chase and Dan Ackroyd and of course the inspiration for both of those...
Road Movies Road to Morocco Road to Singapore etc etc. with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
Any musician with a big personality could also be a ...and I am sorry for this.. Bardic Inspiration. Lady Gaga Alice Cooper Ozzy Ozborne 50 Cent Elvis
Robert Downey Jr. both in real life and in pretty much EVERY character he has ever played has a very strong Bard vibe. The Losers Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny High Fidelity Casanova Doctor Who Coyote Blue Soul Music - Terry Pratchett Bugs Bunny Spider Man Weird Al Yankovik All the Dragon Magazine Song Parodies Erol Flynn The Sting Cool Hand Luke Rocky Horror Picture Show Every Broadway Musical Ever Made All of Shakespeare but especially the fools Fool by Christopher Moore ....Ok I am tired and out of time start with this and if you need more...post again.
literally any disney character that sings, or hugh jackman in the greatest showman, if you've ever seen the three musketeers (mickeys version) then the trubador.
The best way to roleplay Bard isn't to take inspiration like other forms of media. The best is to ROLEPLAY taking inspiration from forms of media. If your party says anything that remotely sounds like a lyric, randomly burst into song. Examples:
DM: "It appears the War Captain was slain by a shot through the heart."
You: "AND YOUR TO BLAME!"
DM: "You a group of villagers caught in a landslide!"
You: "No escape from reality!"
Keep doing this. Eventually, you start to become a Bard yourself.

this is very good advice. Don't try to make your character like someone elses, make them YOUR character.

Natural Armor: But better
