I’m in my very early beginnings of D&D. When you pick a Bardic College at lvl. 3 and the use of your Bardic Inspiration die evolves to whatever college affect is stated for that College, can you keep the ability to also give the original Bardic Inspiration die?
I just hit lvl. 3 and am going for College of Valor, which turns my Bardic Inspiration die affect into Combat Inspiration. With that, do I still have the ability and choice to give my buddies a Bardic Inspiration die if the moment is better to provide them with Bardic Inspiration rather than Combat Inspiration?
Do I have the ability to provide both Bardic Inspiration d6 AS WELL AS Combat Inspiration d6?
Combat Inspiration just gives an additional use-case for Bardic Inspiration. They are the same thing/pool. Instead of only being applicable to saving throws, ability checks, and attack rolls though, they can now also apply to damage rolls and decrease enemy rolls. Once you give the inspiration to a character, it's up to them when they use it (as long as its within 10 minutes)
Also at 3rd level, you learn to inspire others in battle. A creature that has a Bardic Inspiration die from you can roll that die and add the number rolled to a weapon damage roll it just made. Alternatively, when an attack roll is made against the creature, it can use its reaction to roll the Bardic Inspiration die and add the number rolled to its AC against that attack, after seeing the roll but before knowing whether it hits or misses.
