I was trying to come up with a rationale and backstory for a Firbolg bard, and thought of this:
Phigg witnessed the destruction of his village as it was overwhelmed by the horde. He felt his death was imminent and prepared, as best his limited years would allow, to meet his ancestors.
When he heard the crack of thunder and saw the lightning, he was sure it was a calling from the Great Hall, heralding his path to the All-Father. But he could not have been more wrong.
His salvation came at the hands of a band of adventurers, who unselfishly gave several of their number in defense of a people they never met. Phigg felt compelled to tell their story, that they may gain some immortality in the retelling of the tales in the future. First, he went to a local garrison in disguise. While they were happy to train their new recruit in the ways of the sword, their appreciation for his gift of storytelling was secondary to their gift for, well, brewing and consuming. The lone exception was a wandering ranger who would stop by on his patrols, who guided Phigg on the next step of his journey and growth.
I know Firbolg isn’t necessarily optimized mechanically for a Bard, but it’s one of my favorite races and Bard is my favorite class. I think I can spin a good backstory around him becoming a Valor Bard, inspired by the heroics he has seen.
Sure. Valor Bards have more martial weapon proficiencies than most Bards, so the STR bonus won't be a total waste. The ability to turn invisible is also helpful in a fighter-lite subclass like the VBard. "Run away! Run away!" :)
