I am developing my concept for my character's retirement even though he is only level 5 right now. The intent is that at some level above level 15, he will retire and run his own Bardic College, which will hopefully become a homebrew subclass.
My bard has started his career ambitions by establishing an import/export business. He will have a 'shop' where he sells his goods in each town, and he will have a few warehouses scattered in the larger settlements. He has his own "Brand" and when his agents visit towns and villages they are able to buy/sell right out of their carts. He uses his Trademark on sacks used to give customers something to carry their good home in, and on tunics worn by his agents. All this continues to develop. He owns a number of beasts of burden, wagons, harness, barrels and sacks for transporting his goods. He employs agents, general laborers and guards.
His next venture will be to have some taverns built so he is able to do a wider range of business and leverage his I&E business to expand his markets. One of the products he seeks out in the I&E business is spices. He wishes to have the best and rarest spices available. Now he can leverage his contacts in trade to obtain the best ales, mead, wine and other spirits. His taverns and inns will be a brand name like Holiday Inn. As he grows his influence he will seek out the best brewers, vintners, and chefs to build his brand.
His ultimate goal is to build the greatest Globe Theater, operated as an Inn, Tavern, Theater, Research Facility and Bardic College. In support of this penultimate bardic dream achievement, he will also want a number of other businesses that will support the experience of visiting his Globe Theater. For example, across the street from his Globe Theater he will have a stable, a carriage house, a blacksmith and other craftsmen. He will dominate a space of several blocks with these industries, which I imagine to be nicknamed "Bardtown" to the locals when it is nearly done.
Here are a list of the businesses and related real estate associated with this venture:
The Globe Theater, Inn and Tavern, an enormous building that includes a great courtyard for the theater, taverns on the first floor, dining on the second floor, rooms for guests on the third floor, suites for guests on the fourth floor and apartments for my character and his closest associates on the top floor. The rear half will have rooms for actors on the first floor, and theater spaces including the stage; other theater activities and more rooms on the second floor; rooms for bards enrolled in the college on the third floor; classrooms, the library and the archives on the fourth floor, and suites for the faculty, composers and directors on the top floor. In the first basement he will have the kitchens and storage, and the second basement will contain a brewery.
Behind the theater there will be a grand garden, more akin to a park, for everyone in the town to enjoy.
Across the street there will be a carriage house, a blacksmith and a stable with a corral to exercise horses.
Near that there will be a carpenter, a cartwright, a wheelwright and a harness maker.
Near that there will be a tailor, a seamstress, a cooper, a cobler, a furrier, a jeweler and a book store.
Near that there will be a Traveler's Inn and Tavern (an earlier venture that will later be used to allow retainers of the wealthy guests of the Globe to stay in the area), a leatherworker, an alchemist, a locksmith, a cabinet maker, the Import-Export Shop and the Import-Export Warehouse. The warehouse will have an associated stable for the mules and draft horses and a place to keep the wagons out of the rain.
What other sorts of industries would I want to have in "Bardtown?"
What other sorts of flavor can you imagine for this enterprise?
