I'm thinking about a warforged life cleric. the idea being, he has been the cause of so much death he now wants to preserve life. the question, as stated, which deity to follow?
Well, being someone who is trying to atone for the pain they have caused, Ilmater the God of Endurance would be a good choice for your Warforged to follow. Ilmater wishes to end the suffering and pain of all beings. This deity's selfless desire to aid all in pain could have been a part what inspired your character's to atone for the pain he has caused. Also, Ilmater would desire to help your warforged as well, wishing to help alleviate his guilty heart and doubts in his ability to walk a better path as these could cause your character emotional and spiritual pain (if you wish to play up the idea that your character suffers from guilt for his past actions).
Another good option could be Lathander, God of Dawn and Renewal. Lathander represents spring, birth, and renewal, conception, vitality, youth, renewal, and self-perfection. So he is strongly tied to life and the natural cycle. His connection to the Dawn is representative of new beginnings, which would be fitting of your character starting a new chapter of his life as a hero who protects and preserves life.
Lathander is almost the standard "good guy" god for clerics at a lot of FR tables, so would be a decent choice. I liked Rough Coronet's suggestion of Ilmater though, it definitely advance the theme you're going for.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
lathander seems out because of the natural cycle part, as w.f. don't really have a "life span" as it were and don't really follow the natural cycle. but llmater... just may work. eldath is the one i was thinking about working with. there is a part in the description ( sword coast) about their followers being ones that have witnessed extreme violence. but they seem more druid focused...

Which world are you playing in?
Looking up your settings pantheon then look for gods with the life domain would be the easiest in most cases. It's not like a warlock patron.
Who to serve to ???
I should say : Let's serve "the Spaguetti's GODDESS", or spread this continent with your magnificient pasta, my dear Maiden.
