One of my favorite characters to play is a Cleric of Tempus. As a follower of Tempus a cleric can wield a sword. However, I notice that when I create a cleric in DnD Beyond we cannot equip a sword. Can this be changed, modified based on diety?
You can gain weapon proficiencies from some races (and also custom lineage iirc?), and on races that don't grant a sword proficiency you can use customise origin (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) to swap for it. That's the strict rules as written way to do it anyway.
However the first thing to do is just ask your DM (or potential DMs), as they're free to override anything, and swapping warhammer for longsword and/or mace for shortsword is a perfectly reasonable change. To do this on your D&D Beyond character sheet you'll need to click on your tool proficiencies in the bottom left of the sheet (where it lists tools, weapons/armour, languages etc.) to open the sidebar, and then you can add the needed proficiency, then under inventory swap any provided weapon (a warhammer or mace) for the one you want, and when you equip it it should have the correct stats (proficiency bonus on the attack rolls).
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

Thanks for he comprehensive reply, very appreciated.
A Cleric of Tempus should have the War Domain, which grant proficiency with martial weapons and heavy armor.
If you don't have access to it, the best way to wield a sword is to simply reflavor one of the weapon available to you.
