I'm working on a Twilight Cleric of Selune for a post-apocalyptic Forgotten Realms campaign, and I was wondering about how I might want to go about things.
I rolled 15, 15, 14, 14, 13, 12 for my stats, and I'm not sure how to allocate them except to put one 15 in Wis. Among the races that have caught my eye, I'm wondering whether I might want to go with variant human, half-elf, aasimar, or shifter? Also, the DM has said they might allow my character to have natural lycanthropy if I choose human, and could even have a character arc where my Cleric learns to control it. What type of lycanthrope would be complementary to a front-line Cleric's toolkit?
Last but not least, how might I want to plan out my ASI's and feats? If anyone can give me advice about all this, I'd much appreciate it :)
Twilight clerics get heavy armor, so you probably want that other 15 in str so you can use it. Then a 14 in con. Probably the 12 in int. The 14 in dex can help with initiative and dex saves, but in heavy armor, you won’t get any ac from it. But still a good option, or putting it in cha for a boost to a bunch of skills can be a good idea.
Are you using floating racial asi? If so, put the +2 in wis, then the +1 on the 13, wherever it landed. That could set you up for a 1/2 feat at level 4, like fey touched to round out the wisdom (chef can also be fun and pairs well if you’re the party healer). Or, put the +1 in wis and the +2 in con. Then just take a boring old +2 to wis at level 4.
Or, if you go vhuman, put the 2 in wis, and take that 1/2 feat at level 1, and start with an 18 wis.
Check out this dnd beyond article: Embracing Your Wild Side: Playing As a Lycanthrope in D&D - Posts - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com). Since you are embracing the lycanthropy, you get that creature's alignment for your character (unless the DM doesn't care about that). Wearbears are really strong so would make great frontliners and are Neutral Good, which is one of the alignments her clerics follow: Werebear - Monsters - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com). take a 15 in wisdom (and +1). If you're going to wear heavy armor, a 14 in strength with a +1. Maybe the other 15 in CON, 14 in Dex. If DM allows +1 and +2, the +2 to wisdom.
If DM is ok with a variant humans or custom, the feats Fey Touched (which has better spell options than shadow touched), and gift of the Gem dragon give +1 wisdom. I would probably do fey touched, and if you do, you get misty step and one (dinination or charm) spell from here: Spells for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e) - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com). Some especially great options (if the DM is ok with them) in general are gift of alacrity and silvery barbs. Hex and hunter's mark are good for melee characters. Compelled duel good if you are the tank and trying to force a target to fight you....but there are some other great options here. Bless and command are good but it's already on the cleric list.
