I have a campaign coming up, I know what I want to play, but I don’t know the order in which I want to do the levels-so, I’m coming here for help. I want to play it as a more frontline damage focused Cleric, I know what Runes I want besides the seventh level one, and I believe I’ve got spells down. I just don’t know what order to level up, so help would be appreciated.
The biggest question is, are you sure you’re going to level 29. A campaign and hat gets there is very rare. After that, if you’re trying to be a frontline damage dealer, it might be a tough call. My first thought was to make a beeline for fighter 5 for the extra attack and better hit die. But then, cleric 5 gets you spirit guardians (which with giants might would be pretty darn big), so that’s a tough call. The other thing to really consider is, if you do make it to 20, what are you giving up with this split? You lose out on level 7 and above cleric spells, are the fighter abilities worth that? You miss your 3rd and fourth attack, damage die boost and more runes if you stick with fighter. So you have more low to mid level abilities, but miss out on any high level stuff. And you can only do one thing in a round, so having more choices doesn’t necessarily help as much as having fewer, more powerful choices.
There are a couple of options here. Decision 1: 1st level-> Strength/Constitution saves or Charisma/Wisdom saves. Personally I think Str/Con is going to be better long term. So start level 1 as a fighter. Decision 2: Which class to 5th level? Do you want to make a bee line to extra attack or spirit guardians? Those are the two biggest power bumps you get from fighter or cleric. You don't want to be 7th level with neither. Now the other thing to ponder is that the channel divinity on Twilight is really great. So I would prefer going cleric first after the first level of fighter. One other factor might be the rest of your party's composition. If you have enough healing and other casters than hit fighter first. If instead they are counting on you to be the cleric then you need to get that taken care of first. Regardless, you probably want to be 5 levels in one class at 6th level. At 6th level you want 3rd level spells or extra attack. Having neither is really, really hard. Decision 3: Greater restoration. A number of adventures start assuming you have it. You need to make sure you have it in the party. If you are the only one who has access then this could really put a damper on your multiclassing. Bard/Cleric/Druid/Celestial Warlock/Divine Soul Sorcerer. You need 9 levels of cleric to get there. Without it your party can be in real trouble.
Asumming you have Greater Restoration covered by someone else, I would next get fighter to 3rd level. There would be a good reason to get to 5/5 at 10th level. I think at that point the rest of the build doesn't matter for order.
