So I'm looking to build a War Cleric Vengeance Paladin build with 17 Cleric/3 Paladin, but I'm having trouble on the timing. Should I start three Paladin or cleric and swap mid way through? What's the optimal time to Paladin Dip? Any other suggestions for the build are appreciated :)
I’d probably start with the Paladin: that’d give you the Heavy Armour training and Martial Weapon proficiencies. If you’re using the 2024 PHB, then you’d be free to choose the Thaumaturge divine order (as you’d have all the Protector benefits) for an extra cantrip (and the bonuses to Religion and Arcana checks).
Do you think it's worth it going for three levels of paladin or just two for the fighting style and smites?
Level 3: Vow of Enmity
When you take the Attack action, you can expend one use of your Channel Divinity to utter a vow of enmity against a creature you can see within 30 feet of yourself. You have Advantage on attack rolls against the creature for 1 minute or until you use this feature again.
If the creature drops to 0 Hit Points before the vow ends, you can transfer the vow to a different creature within 30 feet of yourself (no action required).
This is not to bad at 3rd level. Just got to weigh it with what 18 cleric gets you(btw that’s from 2024 PHB) not sure if that’s what rules you are intending on using)
The Vengeance subclass options do look pretty good, whereas level 18 Cleric only grants an extra use of Channel Divinity and an extra prepared spell. Also, because of the changes to multiclassing rules in 2024, taking a third level of Paladin won’t adversely affect your spell slot progression.
One issue to consider is that you’ll need a strong spread of ability scores: a minimum of 13 in STR, WIS and CHA to enable the multi class, plus decent CON. Looking at the prerequisites, CHA is the one you probably least need for your features. You then need to decide whether to initially concentrate on STR or WIS. If you prioritise WIS, then it might be worth looking at True Strike. You could get that from the Magic Initiate (Wizard) origin feat, either from the Sage (or a Custom) background or as a Human, or from choosing to be a High Elf. If you got True Strike from a species feature, then the Farmer background might be useful: Tough will compensate somewhat for the relatively low CON, and you get a choice of ASIs in STR, CON and WIS.
