I am a novice player, thinking of creating a Forge Cleric serving Moradin. The background is is that I am the son of the priest in Sundabar, my lack of intelligence meant I struggled with the more in depth area of theology but love my God and desire to be as much like him as possible. As Moradin forged the world I spent much time mastering the skills of the forge, I have Moradin's hatred for Orc's and desire to become a hammer of Moradin. Moradin has seen my heart and imbued me with some holy power but I will not be considered as a Hammer until I have combat experience, to gain that experience I believe Moradin wants me to go adventuring.
Anyway I have a couple of questions about my Character
According to this link Moradin's Clerics wear Chainmail, does this mean Moradin would be displease if I wore splint or plate?
Given my background would I be more likely to be a hill dwarf or mountain dwarf. I am talking about lore here not about which race would be more effective in battle.
Are there any spells that Moradin would not approve of, I suspect that he would frown with creation of the undead with spells such as Animate dead would would grant spells such as spare the dying (unless it was on an Orc) but what about other necromancy spells like Toll the Dead and inflict wounds?
This is 4 days old now and you probably have your answer already, but it looks like hill dwarf is more likely as a cleric of moradin than a mountain dwarf. Not by much, but enough that reading the wikia page of both would lead you to that conclusion.
Here is the Dogma of the worship of Moradin according to the same wikia “Moradin is the father and creator of the dwarven race. Honor him by emulating his principles and workmanship in smithing, stoneworking, and other tasks. Wisdom is derived from life and tempered with experience. Advance the dwarven race in all areas of life. Innovate with new processes and skills. Found new kingdoms and clan lands, defending the existing ones from all threats. Lead the dwarves in the traditions laid down by the Soul Forger. Honor your clan leaders as you honor Moradin.”
Given that, I don’t see anything limiting spells beyond your character’s conscience. As to armor, the call to innovate would tell me if the armor was made by hammer and tongs, and you have a reason for using it over mail, Moradin would not find fault in that.
This is a old post but I too am curious about everyone's thoughts on this.
My Dwarven cleric was kicked out from. The hammers of Moradin after sparing the life of an orcish child after a battle. He was stripped of his rank, title and most of his blessings. He is trying to regain the favour of the All-Father (Moradin).
He claims doesn't heal people, he Reforge them and repairs their wounds.
Blood of iron
Bones of steel
Reforge their flesh
Wounds to heal
Im hoping he can use this logic to Animate dead himself, he is reforging materials to life just as Moradin the soul forger did. He may even call himself a soul forger in honour of his god.
I'm even considering he actively tries to improve his craft so he can create true life as moradin did.
He can craft armoured suits and weapons for his "creations" and treat them with respect.
Would that conflict with a LG alignment or harm his connection to Moradin?
The only real problem with any necromancy is Orcus. Any undead creature is his eyes. No matter if made with good intention and Moradrins blessing. But dm's can rule it however they want.
You can always have his prayers answered by another. He doesn't need to know for now. Eventually the god can clue in the player, but for now "Moradin" should enthusiastically answer his prayers.

Or could you re-skin animate dead as animating the weapons and armor?
