My cleric has just hit lvl6 and as my group have more and more hit points 40-55 currently I have found I am healing less and less in combat which I seem to get strange looks from my group when they get hit and I don't automatically heal straight away. I am trying to heal less in combat then use only one healing spell out of combat like Prayer of healing if all damaged or something like that.
How do you guys go about healing? Have you had any comments from your group if you don't automatically heal them as soon as they start taking damage?
I feel its better that I help with utility spells during combat or help damage along rather than reactive healing all the time.
Yes, in and after tier 2 levels, healing as soon as one takes damage seems quite rushed. Well, there are batlles and battles of course, but I dont' like uni-tasker characters. The cleric decides what it is better in the moment according to his/her spells, features and abilities economy in general.
It is almost always better to try to prevent damage in combat (either by buffing allies, debuffing foes, or simply slaying enemies) and then heal in safety.
The main exclusion is when party members are knocked out - since non-death revival in this edition is as simple as restoring any number of hit points, this is where combat healing (especially Healing Word) shines.
Honestly I find in combat healing to be a waste of time. Ratwhowouldbeking is right, a cleric's spells are better served as buffs/debuffs or as damage. At higher levels, the damage dealt is often higher than the healing the cleric could provide during the battle. That is just my experience though and just my opinion.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
