Hey I was looking to make a cleric for the next campaign I’ll be playing in. Does anyone have any good (doesn’t have to be the best) and fun melee builds for them?
I really enjoyed playing a tempest cleric as a melee. Heavy armor, shield, martial weapons. Good domain spells for damage. Channel divinity good for use in combat. Still good healing. I did pirate background, cause I thought storms and ships are a good fit, so that was fun for RP. max out wis, str to 15 for the heavy armor (I rarely actually used my weapon, just cantrip), con as good as possible. Take warcaster asap. Otherwise ASI.
Centaurs make fantastic melee clerics- they've got high strength and wisdom scores, they have a bonus to movement speed so you can get in close faster.
As far as domains go, War and Tempest are probably the best- Tempest gives you nifty abilities and crowd-control options at close range, while War gives you bonus attacks. Warcaster is a good feat, though most of the time you'll probably want to make melee attacks rather than rely on cantrips, especially once you hit 8th level and get Divine Strike.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
If you aren’t concerned about access to martial weapons, Forge Domain can be a fun one. Lots of fiery buffs and other bonuses to your gear, and they can easily slot into a party. Might lose some effect against fire immune enemies. Order domain can also do well for a melee cleric. Might consider Dwarves, Centaurs, and Minotaurs for races.
I'd take a real hard look at Arcana. Go variant human, and pick magic initiate -> druid, and take shillelagh and thornwhip as your cantrips. For your two arcane cantrips, take Booming Blade and Greenflame blade to make melee attacks that actually scale well.. Shillelagh allows you to essentially use your wis mod for your attack and damage rolls. You can use thorn whip to pull people into your spirit guardians once you get that spell. Potent cantrip works with the melee cantrips. I'd put a melee arcana cleric up against a tempest or war cleric any day of the week and expect to pump out superior melee dps.
Alternatively, a high half-elf can get booming blade or greenflame blade as a cantrip. Then nature domain can pick up shillelagh and so similar things, plus wear heavy armor if you so choose.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Ok thanks for all the suggestions I’m going for either Tempest or Forge!

Potent cantrip only applies to cleric cantrips. You can't use it on Shillelagh or Thorn Whip because those still count as a druid cantrips.
