So, i am person who's very fond of the eldritch or anything remotely close to lovecraftian theme. And it had me thinking, would it be reasonable to make a cleric who's main purpose is to worship the eldritch being? Apparently some in dnd do talk to their warlocks and all that like Tharizdun for example. I know that these are otherwordly beings that bestow madness hence why most GOO locks tend to leech off their powers and as per the classic lovecraft fate end up insane but i am wondering if there is a logical way to make it work.
Key notes: - i know it depends on the DM and my imagination but i am collecting opinions and different perspectives from other people
- I am asking this because i might make the Domain but first i need to see if it makes sense in the first place.
- Feel free to put suggestions to what sort of ability ideas you think this domain should have.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
I think to keep it kind of clericy you should see that the "Madness" is balanced between doing good and evil. Clerics don't have to be purely good ofc. but maybe lean more into the "chaos" aspekt of it, so you can explain why you still heal people.
It could make sense. You have clerics of death and the grave, and they heal people. You have a spore druid who looks at decay as part of the cycle of life and rebirth.
Madness could be something like a gift you bestow on the worthy.
Or it could be something you study, seeing it as part of a spectrum or cycle. Maybe like a therapist angle where you help heal it.
I could see domain spells like lesser and greater restoration. Tasha's hideous laughter. otto's irresistable dance. Vicious mockery, and spells generally that do psychic damage. (I realize these don't necessarily fit with people who have actual mental illnesses, they're more of the popular imagination of what an illness is like.)
Could be an interesting theme; there have been instances in the past where religious figures have considered the mad to be closer to god/the gods, but that their minds simply couldn't handle raw divinity, or that through their madness they speak for the divine.
It would make sense then for a cleric to consider madness a gift, and actively seek to study it, or even to consider bestowing madness upon others to be a blessing to them.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
I like those ideas... and i guess there is a way to make sense of it. What gods would fit this domain though? Great old ones...? or are there good examples from existing ones.?
