Hello! I'm playing a druid in forgotten realms right now. I'm a druid level 6 but divine agent level 1. (Special Rule: +1 spellcaster lvl in all the levels of divine agent so I'm a level 7 spellcaster) The druid is an awesome class in her ways but damage is not one of them, trust me. have a magical +1 scimitar. It has a damage die of 1d6. My total damage with the scimitar is 1d6+3. But I thought about the falchion. Putting aside the fact that it's a 2 handed weapon and I have a shield but so is a staff. But a falchions damage die is 2d4. But it's this question I need help with: What has the highest chance of getting more damage. 1d6 or 2d4. I'm hoping for the 2d4 because it's another die I'm rolling. But I need something to bring to my DM because he always answers with: "It's not the dice but how many + you get." Well I'm not getting shit bonuses from the scimitar I have now do I?! And if I don't bring up hey, I kinda like the falchion, what chance do I have to get a magical one. I may get one after 4 levels, or after 2 hours of playing. But if I could get some help in this that would be great, thanks in advance! ^^
1d6 has a minimum of 1 damage, maximum of 6, average of 4 (if I am not wrong) 2d4 have a minimum of 2, maximum of 8 and average of 5
Purely dice-wise, I think it's pretty clear what wins out. Taking into account the fact that your Scimitar is +1, though, that would rise the d6 stats to minimum 2, maximum 7 and average of 5, so only 1 max damage lower than the 2d4, but you technically still have higher chances of getting a higher value the more dice you roll, usually at least.
In the end, imho, it boils down to personal preference: do you prefer having a one handed weapon and a free hand (for the somatic components of your spells, for example) or do you prefer the two handed option?

This is your 3.5 campaign, right? Damage for a druid shouldn't be coming from melee weapons. Wildshape and spells are your bread and butter and melee is a fall back when those tools are exhausted or unavailable. How are you using your spells? How are you using wildshape?
Although your question has been answered, both with correct and incorrect math, it might be useful for you to know a very quick way to figure average dice rolls -
Per die, the average roll for any (standard) dice is half the maximum possible roll plus 0.5.
So for a d6 its half of 6 (3) plus 0.5 = 3.5.
For a d4 it's half of 4 (2) plus 0.5 = 2.5
multiply by the number of dice rolled if you are rolling multiple dice (say 3d6)
So 3d6 is an average of 1d6 (3.5) times 3 dice = 10.5.
That aside, you are likely much better off using a cantrip such as poison spray, thorn whip, or produce flame as your 'default' attack rather than either melee weapon in most cases, especially now that you are past level 5 and cantrip damage is increased.Edit: Not applicable if this is 3.5 Edition as someone else mentioned.
^This is correct. The reason is because zero is not an option. So for a D4, your options are rolling a 1, 2, 3, or 4. So the average is not 2, but rather, since there's an even chance of all of them, they are added together (10) and divided by 4 to get the average result, which is 2.5. Mathematically, that's the same as just dividing it in half and adding .5, and that principle holds true across all dice. So 2d6 (average of 7) is way better than a d10 (average of 5.5). 2d4 (average of 5) is way better than a single d6 (average of 3.5). A 1d6+1 however is average of 4.5 (3.5+1) so 2d4 is *barely* better than it. Certainly switching from a 1h weapon that does on average 4.5 to a 2h weapon and losing a shield doesn't normally seem like a good trade to me, but under 3.5 rules the change in how your Str bonus is calculated *could* make it worth it if you're power attacking, but it seems your Str bonus is no higher than +2 so I doubt that's a huge factor. Your call, but I hope that rambling helps.

I am not overly familiar with 3.5, but can absolutely agree that druids should be getting damage from wild shape and spells. If you just want to hit something you choose the wrong class.
Well it's 3.0. But it's mostly because my DM puts a lot of high AC, meat bags of hp enemies to try and balance out that he gave my little brother's half orc babarian a speed greataxe! xD
And so I wanted to defend myself a little bit, because just casting 1 spell a turn or shooting 1 arrow a turn and then waiting a hole ******* 7-13 minutes of math from my little brother because his barbarian is a little to good. And then after a little while I spend the rest of the battle healing him. So I wanted a way to do a little more damage. But my DM allowed me to make a spell that gives me my WISDOM MODIFIER IN ATTACK AND DAMAGE BONUS! YAAAY! Spellcasting modifier to hit and dmg! That sounds so ******* awesome! Until I only do 11 damage... My DM's wisdom is 3 irl. He can't see that when I only get 1 attack, and I have just last game roll my first melee crit with a spear and a scimitar crits on 18-20 he can't see that using a long sword is better because of the 1d8 damage instead. I use a 1d6+3 and that is just not enough for demons like vrocks or stone skin sorcerers. I know I'm no dps nor at least made for a little damage but srsly my DM's feeling for a player is like talking to a toaster. But it doesn't give ya toast, it gives burn out 3 year old pig meat or something... xD
I know talking to my DM is probably a good idea but I did and... well I guess I can rob it now, my "Dad" is not one who is good at listing to his players. My little brothers barbarian is metagamed, and that does not make it anymore fun for me when my dad says AFTER LIKE 6 MONTHS OF ME SAYING: "I NEED A WAY BETTER SCIMITAR." THEN HE SAYS "WAIT, YOUR SCIMITAR IS ONLY +1?" I've been saying that to him since I was level ******* 3! I'm almost level 9 now..! xD He goes for what is best for the warrior and thinks because I'm the spellcaster that I don't need to feel powerful when it comes to anything other than spell casting. And then he puts demons in the game with spell resistance... I like D&D and don't get me wrong I've had some good times with them both but my problem is that I am around 3 power levels behind my little brother because my dad tries to give "HIM" harder enemies but it just ends up making the game harder for me and makes him instead of only missing on a 1 maybe 2 then misses on a 6. But me, I'm pretty sure that the vrock demons, I can't damage then with my scimitar. You need a +2 weapon. I looted a spear that is +2 of a sorcerer fey'ri but my 2 new spells I made are only for scimitars.... Else they had to be higher level than I can cast them! xD So.... I think if this goes on for a while I'm going to pile down a shit load of gold for myself. And one day I'm gonna say: "I cast teleport. I teleport to everlund and find a shop that deals in magical items and I buy a +5 scimitar for 28.000 gp. Then I sleep for a day and cast teleport back to Merric." And then I make a few healing potions probably and for once try to kill shit. My large sized wolves can't do shit for me right now. Because I have to use spells of 2-4 level to make their attacks magical. (+2 is my max) And then I need them to fly, because all our enemies right now are either fey'ri,or vrocks! xD. But holy shit I rambled there. I should probably think about some stuff.... huh. (Sorry!)
Yeah, cantrips in 3.0/3.5 are SHIIIIIT! My DM keeps saying: "Well, that's because you don't use them!". No! I DON'T USE GET +1 ON "1" ROLL AGAINST DEMONS WITH AT LEAST 25 AC AND WERE I NEED A +2 OR GREATER WEAPON SO THEY DON'T TAKE LIKE -10 DAMAGE OF IT! XD I'm around 90% sure that my DM doesn't even know that unless I can't a spell, I can't damage someone with stone skin. Srsly. I'm almost level 9. Can't damage someone with stone skin with what he wants me to have as my primary weapon. I keep wanting a new weapon and he says: "Just use the damn scimitar.". Max damage with it is 9. Around the best damage I can do is 23 with a 4th level spell.
While shape sucks because we have flying demons with +2/10 damage resistance I think it is . And I can only wild shape into medium or small animals twice a day. It's simply because in 3.0, druids are lackluster at lower levels. But when I can do huge and dire animals. His great great demon with 250 hp or whatever, that thing is going down by a dire weasel! HA HA! Suck it! xD
I would of course buy a magical one. It's impossible for us at this point in the campaign to use non magical weapons. If we do, we don't do damage. We need at least I think it's +2 weapons.

If you have spells that are homebrew, work with your dm to have them key off any weapon, if you''ve created a spell that only works with one weapon and your dm is limiting that weapon you need to talk to them about that and then demonstrate it.
Go into combat and use that weapon and explain as you do things what is happening - that way you can demonstrate your complaints.
I don't really know 3.0, but it sounds like the DM is catering to one player, talk to the dm and players about balancing the scales. If that doesn't work and if you are being "forced" to hang back and heal, don't heal. Just play the character the way you want, doing the spells and attacks you want and let the other member take the hits, one session of that character getting knocked out or having to flee may help them understand your frustration.
Also, ask the DM to explain what they would do if they were in your shoes, make them think about being a player in that situation and they may realize that they are not building encounters that are appropriate for your party composition.
If adventures were "real" they would go into situations they understood and could handle. If they know that against a dragon they would be burnt to a crisp and eaten, they aren't going to go looking for a dragon.
As a player, if you are constantly facing situations that that character can't handle, that character would realistically say to the rest of the party "screw you guys, I'm going home, hope you enjoy your probable deaths" and they would leave.
In 3.0 a druid at your level should not be engaging with a melee weapon unless it's a last resort, it should not be your go to combat mechanic. Druids are a support caster/pet class in 3.0. You should be using summon nature's ally, your pet, a couple well placed AOE spells, and your wildshape to wreak havoc on the battlefield. You don't need a new sword, you need a magic staff that lets you cast more spells (or some wands, wands are great too especially for out of combat healing). Call lightning is a pretty good spell, it's only single target, but a single cast lets you do a fair amount of damage.
I don't think there are any prestige classes that might make a druid capable of standard melee combat,. There were a couple that made you better at pet management or wild-shape:if I remember correctly or in supplemental material that may not be allowed in your group. (one of my favorites was a class that let you increase your damage die for attacks, gave you fast healing and reach, and made you immune to crits while in wild-shape).
@AaronWho druids in 3.0 and 3.5 were far more restrictive about the weapons and armor they could use. If they used anything outside of the acceptable list or some other special items, they severed their connection with nature and lost all their powers and basically became a high level villager. Also if he stops healing the barbarian it's going to be a party wipe, that's just the way 3.0 worked. Which might not be a bad idea in order to prove a point, but the OP is going to get blamed for it.
This is very helpful. I think I might try that not healing thing. But yeah, I have thought of that my druid says "Yo I got some shit to take care off, later homie" and dip. Because while I love playing a druid, I'm being set in the spot of a cleric. But this really help though, thank you so much! ^^
So, wildshape is not as good as people think in 3.0. Because as of know, I'm level 6 druid level 2 divine agent. And say if I wildshape into a wolf. It has like 19 hp and a 14 ac. It's not very good. I'm playing in forgotten realms. And I'm a mielikki druid so I can use light and medium armor as well as all simple and martial weapons. But I'm really hoping that I can get up to the better parts of wildshape. Like huge elements, that's when it works ^^. But mainly, I think I'm going to try a little more in depth look at the next few battles and probably talk with my DM. If worst comes to worst I have a few ideas as to how I can write her out of the story and hopefully make a new pc. Though, it's not because I hate druid. It's just I am kinda feeling forced into healing. And the enemies "we" are facing are made after my little brother's barbarian. And that is bad, because they have like 22 AC, most of them are resistance to fire and cold dmg, and that sucks a lot for me because the 2 kinds of damage spells I have are mostly fire and then a littttle bit cold. And they have a really good spell resistance.... xD
Yeah but, reincarnate brings back into random body. And we are not really looking for a pc death xD.
But I see that ppl like the "call lightning" spell. I just want to say: In 3.0 it takes 10 minutes to cast and I need a storm present for it to work. As well as I can only shoot 1 lightning each 10 minutes. Or is it every minute? Can't remember. But it's not that good in battle.. D: sadly. I do use flame strike. It's really good! ^^ Problem is that most enemies we face now have fire resistance. So if they make their save it's halved. And then halved. xD But at least half of it is just damage from the gods. ^^
Hmm, I remember flame strike being half divine energy in 3.0. Is that not the case (I can't even find it online anymore, I'd have to see if I can't dig up my PHB)?
Out of curiosity, why 3.0, and not 3.5? I know it's your DM's decision, and you didn't have much influence on it, but it's odd to me. 3.5 wasn't a completely new edition like 4.0 or 5.0. It was a direct replacement for 3.0 because really needed it. In computer terms it was service pack 1.
Well, it's a mix between 3.0 and 3.5. Mostly because that's the edition my DM had and we like the skill points thingy a little more than advantage and disadvantage. Though we are making a new version of the skill system because we don't get enough skill points xD. But it's mostly a mix. ^^
Yeah flame strike does do half divine damage. But if they already take say 10 less fire damage, and make their save. It's still -10 plus - half damage. And the last few times I've used it, the damage has been around 28. Or 23. Some that is under 10 damage. But yes, it does do half divine. But here, this link will guide you to a website with 3.0 if you need it in the future.
If you're allowed to use both you almost strictly want to use 3.5. For example, call lightning is full-round action for the initial cast rather than 10 minutes. Your animal companion actually scales with you (not great, but better), clearer/better rules about what your companion is capable of, etc.

Hmmm...
Horizontal Wall of Fire, top side hot, bottom cold, set at 6 feet so you are safe but the Vrok takes 2d6+9 every round.
Flame Strike 9d6 damage
Meld into Stone, hide until the fight is over.
Call Lighting 3d6 per round for 9 rounds
save a Reincarnate for when the fight is over so you can rez the dead Barb.
