He says Druid lv 5 with 20 Wis turning into a clawfoot raptor could have +11 perception - and i dont quite get it - is his math wrong? i also don't see anything showing expertise for the raptor
- or get the values like athletics, stealth, perception +5 (in case of the raptor) added ontop of my own existing values (like in my case athletics -1 +5 = +4?
or is it like if i had proficiency in stealth for example ( 1 + 2 [from prof.]) and i turn into a beast --------- like the +5 stealth raptor is it then +5 +2 (from my prof.) resulting in +7?
so far i played like (in case of dire wolf) i could use the +3 (perception) or the perception value of my druid +6
maybe this is a stupid question - but can you help me with it ^^'
Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the beast, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the creature. If the creature has the same proficiency as you and the bonus in its stat block is higher than yours, use the creature’s bonus instead of yours.
The Raptor's perception is +5. So, you'd use the druid's +11.
okay - i still have to ask, i know i keep my WIS value - but still how is it calculated - i don't get it
Level 5 + 1 = perception ability modifier 6. - what is this 5+1? from where ^^'?
6 + 5 = 11 - and then adding them together- why? i thought they get replaced?
in my case Lv. 4 Druid 18 WIS =+4 Prof.= +2 - so my Perception is +6
the raptors perception is +5 - so even when i am transformed - my druids perception +6 is better -- so overall even transformed a perception check would only have +6 - right?
Ability score total - 10/2 (e.g., 20 Wisdom = 20 - 10/2, rounded down = 5)
PC level + 1
Both of these are added together for the full ability score modifier.
Here's the Perception ability score modifier for a 4th level druid with a Wisdom of 18:
Wisdom 18 - 10/2, rounded down = 4
Level 4 + 1 = 5
Total Perception ability score modifier = 9 (4+5)

This is incorrect.
Skill bonuses are equal to your ability score modifier if not proficient and your ability score modifier + proficiency bonus if proficient. With expertise, you add the proficiency bonus twice. Character level is never directly used in the calculation; it is factored in by the proficiency bonus that scales with level.
Your level 4 Druid with 18 wisdom has an ability score modifier 4 + proficiency bonus 2 for a total of 6 perception.

He's wrong. The claw foot raptor has Perception +5 from Expertise in Perception (+2x2=+4) and WIS +1. A Druid with 20 WIS would substitute their +5 WIS modifier for the raptor's +1, to give +9, still pretty excellent. He gets +11 by substituting the +3 proficiency bonus of the 5th level Druid for the +2 proficiency bonus of the raptor and doubling it for the raptor's expertise, and adding the +5 WIS modifier of the Druid. However, it doesn't work that way, you have to choose between the Druid's Perception's bonus, or the the raptor's (modified for having the Druid's WIS score). You can't have both the Druid's proficiency bonus and the raptor's expertise. It's either/or.
If the Druid themselves had expertise in perception, you would get the +11.
I also have to note that the Druid would have to have seen a claw foot raptor in order to be able change into one. If there are no dinosaurs in the campaign world, I can't imagine how the Druid would have ever seen one.
Edited to add: you can deduce that the raptor has a proficiency bonus of +2 from the fact that its STR modifier is +3 and its Athletics is +5. From there you can deduce that it has expertise in Perception from the fact that its Perception of +5 is equal to twice its proficiency bonus plus its WIS modifier.
My bad, thanks for setting me straight (I'm new). This is correct:
Your level 4 Druid with 18 wisdom has an ability score modifier 4 + proficiency bonus 2 for a total of 6 perception.
A 4th level druid with an 18 wisdom gets +4 in Perception checks (b/c perception is a wisdom based skill). And if the druid chose to take a proficiency in Perception (as a skill), they get a +2 proficiency bonus.
Hi there, i got another question regarding the wildshape.
I saw this video ( https://youtu.be/Yhr2nyaiPiU?si=IrtMYrgdMkQ2B21l&t=158 ) and it got me confused. Regarding the part how he does the math for Perception of the Clawfoot Raptor ( https://dnd-5e.fandom.com/wiki/Clawfoot_Raptor ).
He says Druid lv 5 with 20 Wis turning into a clawfoot raptor could have +11 perception - and i dont quite get it - is his math wrong? i also don't see anything showing expertise for the raptor

5th level Druid with 20 Wisdom:
The PH says this about wildshape
The Raptor's perception is +5. So, you'd use the druid's +11.

Any ability score modifier is calculated thus:
Both of these are added together for the full ability score modifier.

Total Perception ability score modifier = 9 (4+5)
