Back in second edition there was an elven ranger kit (think subclass) that forwent trappings of civilization. One of their taboos was to not use a mount but in return they running and endurance proficiencies (kinda skill/feat combos) which basically let them run all day at horse speed but not much combat effect.
I was curious about this for my Circle of the Moon druid though I realize it could apply to any druid, what if I didn't want to get a mount but be the mount and would that be a problem for daily travel.
So I looked at the travel rules and found this in the PHB:
"The table states how far the party can move in a period of time; if riding horses or other mounts, the group can move twice that distance for 1 hour, after which the mounts need a Short or Long Rest before they can move at that increased pace again"
The DMG mentions that mph = Speed÷10 so a horse m9ght go 6 mph but tires out after an hour?
So assuming mounts must do the 1 hour SR 1 hour SR than going at a normal pace for 5 1 hour travels interspersed with 4 short rests you could travel 30 miles a day consuming only 1 total use of Wild shape starting at level 2.
It is really up to your DM, many allow the party to go further in a day by horse back than walking and your logic does seem reasonable. Though will the rest of the party keep up?
The other option is to pull a cart. At one point in my current campaign we had to travel from one side of the continent to the other (when we were level 6). The artificer wanted us to buy a horse and cart so he could build a magic itm while we travelled. My (stars) druid pointed out how dangerous the roads were and a horse might not survive or run away at the first combat so I volunteered to be the horse. The DM agreed I could walk for 3 hours (normal pace), have a short rest walk for 3 hours have another short rest then walk for 2 hours before we stop for the night, that way I always had a wild shape left so if we got into combat I could go into starry form. This was under 2014 rules, with 2024 rules if you had a combat you would need to have 2 short rests to get both wild shape back (which may or may not be allowed by the DM). It worked very well but we grew out of it quickly, for subsequant long journeys allies, and then the party could cast teleportation circle, transport via plants or teleport (we are currently level 15)
