There's a whole bunch of flavor text talking about druid's connection to the elements, but there aren't any elemental druids. What's up with that? like, sorcerer at least has draconic heritage which can be reflavored to elemental, but druid doesn't have anything. The closest it comes is with moon druid's ability to turn into elementals at level 10, but it doesnt have anything for an entire subclass that uses the 4 elements. Is there a reason for Wizards of the Coast to do this or am i looking way too much into this?
I don’t think we know. It might simply be that the WotC development team have never had that particular inspiration. Or they might have thought of it but haven’t come up with mechanics that they thought would be fun to play. I don’t think we’ve seen one reach the Unearthed Arcana stage yet.
We do have a few Druid Circles that can be tied to individual Elemental Planes, such as Wildfire and the Sea. It’s possible that they prefer the more specific theming than the Elemental Planes in total, but that’s pure speculation.
There isn’t really any subclass that is directly based on the Elemental Planes. The closest are the Genie Patron Warlock and the Oath of the Noble Genie Paladin. They playtested a Primordial Patron Warlock, themed around the Elder Elemental Evils, but it didn’t get enough approval in the feedback for them to take it further (possibly because it overlapped somewhat with the Genie Patron).
Potentially, they could keep the idea of the Primordial Patron and make it an Elemental Druid. The 5.5 Moon Druid no longer had the option to Wildshape into Elementals, so they have that mechanic “free” now, too.
I would love to see WotC put out a Druid subclass that is themed as using the elemental energies of the world around them rather than being tied to other planes. It would be a lot of fun to have a Druid that is designed as a multi-elemental blaster.
It doesn't make sense. Typically, druids get their power from Nature, and elemental power is the most pervasive power in nature. In campaigns that I run I homebrew elemental options for druids, e.g., druids can worship elemental lords (and primordials), which includes the option for a homebrew elemental subclass, auto-prepared elemental-flavored spells, an elemental-flavored animal companion, etc.
