As someone returning to DnD as an adult after years of video games and MTG, I have been wrestling with my role in the party particularly as a complex class that really can do a lot. Additionally starting at low level and now being at level 6, the needs of the group has changed. So I wanted to ask for input from the group what their roles both in and out of combat have been, particularly from a flavor perspective rather than my tendency of what will have the best stats. An example is now I'm doing more crowd control as a moondruid rather than max DPS, or I'm focused on gathering intel by befriending animals rather than needing to rush into every interaction and prove I'm the Alpha. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks. - Silver.
No matter the game system, or the class, or the race I have played, my focus has never been to optimized stats and roles in combat. If you can talk the rampaging wolf pack out of eating all the livestock of a small village, it is the better solution compared to obliterating them with Call Lightning. Skill and social based solutions to a problem will always provide more story hooks to continue your paths. You will always remember how you defeated the beast, not how many damage you dealt.
Just take a look at Critical Role campaign 2: Do you remember how high Nott's damage was, or "the Fluffernutter" as an action?
Having a druid or ranger turns any harrowing wilderness expedition into a pleasant stroll with ample supplies and friendly animals, so be sure to mention how much easier their life is just from you being there to aid them with your spells. ;)
