Ive realised that a lot of people run wild shape armour in different way, some players choose to use the characters armour and have the animal wear it, and in the case of my campaign my druid only takes the armour of the animal (some cases this is good and bad)
what i would like to know is how you as DM's run it.
Public Mod Note
(MellieDM):
Moved from Dungeon Master's Guild to Druid.
I use the beast's AC from their stat block. The rules on Wild Shaping state that equipment doesn't change shape to match the new shape and armor that fits on a humanoid won't fit on any beast shapes except maybe an Ape.
That's where you need to partner with your friend who is a wizard and have him cast Mage Armor on you and/or get your hands on magic items like Cloak of Protection that are a little bit flexible and can be worn in both your natural shape and your wild shape, even though a Lion wearing a cloak would look ridiculous.
I always go with the beast's AC (except unarmored defense if multiclassed or mage armor/barkskin). Otherwise you need to be able to justify the animal wearing armor sized fro a human(oid).
