Hello all! For our upcoming quest the DM estimates about a half success/half death rate and I thought It wise to begin crafting my next character on the chance my current character succumbs to an untimely death. I dearly hope she survives but it never hurts to be prepared. My next character concept is a necromancer druid. My question regards Druidic Circles - I am torn between the Circle of the Spores and the Circle of Twilight. They completely contradict each other but both present fascinating options. Ideologically my character would agree with the Spores (beauty in decay; the cycle of life, death and undeath) however I find the gameplay of Twilight more compelling. (Harvest's Scythe, speaking to the dead, etc.). I am wondering if anyone else has built a necromancer druid and what you would advise. Considered making a straight necromancer wizard but she is aligned with a nature goddess and it feels like the more organic extension of the character - mechanics are not my area as I tend to go for something more story driven. All advice much appreciated, thank you.
Point of clarification: did you mean Domain of twilight, as in cleric?
I do have a circle of spores Druid character built, I have yet to use him. He is a rock gnome, first drawn to the circle by the Harper's need to have reliable eyes on the underground passageways networking criminal organizations to their targets. But upon discovering vastness and I dare say intelligence of the mycelium. He began to delve deep into their study and understanding. He developed a supernatural understanding of the land and the passages beneath. This seems to serve the Harper's... But who or what else does it serve?
As for Necromancer, they are like anyone really.... just trying to RAISE a family!
I'm rather enjoying my Svirfneblin Spore Druid. He's not a necromancer per se, but it's early days yet. Tried a necromancer wizard and it was underwhelming in gameplay.
There is I subclass in main dnd 5e that is a twilight Druid. Though I have not looked into it. Though It does exist.
The twilight druid is a 6 year old Unearthed Arcana subclass that has not received a published version, so it is not main.
With ample reflavoring, a normal druid can feel like a necromancer, it just requires a bunch of buy in from the dm and fellow players. All of your summons now are grabbing skeletons and zombies instead of beasts. Conjure Elemental for an Earth Elemental? Now it looks like Gravelord Nito, or a bunch of bones interspersed with graveyard dirt. Casting Awaken on a tree? You're binding the memories of the dead to a plant in order to give that spirit another lease on life. Casting Reincarnate? You've got yourself a frankenstein's monster.
Also consider a reflavored MtG background like Golgari from Ravnica or Witherbloom from Strixhaven. I know my testimonial might not mean a lot to you or your dm, but I'm playing a Golgari wildfire druid and with so much crossover between regular druid spells and the extras, the only one to jump out is Animate Dead, and I've already come to realize it just isn't worth preparing and casting most of the time. I've even been able to add Summon Undead to my list and that is one to watch out for.
I have a reborn/undead circle of spores necromancer druid wizard, main focus is spellcasting and cantrip fun since i just got to lvl (3 wiz 3 druid), but im trying to raise armies of animals and buff them with druidic magics and be a support/ranged fighter, also i have an awesome sidekick/companion, a reborn/undead raven whos a healer/spellcaster and can take spells from druid and cleric lists, im having so much fun running a muticlass with a second pc for my first ever dnd game....
