What are some of the cool uses of the animal stat blocks you’ve seen for wild shape? I mean, everyone’s moon Druid can become a brown bear, but I like to change stat blocks to make each of my many Druid characters more unique (eg I used panther stat block for a lynx - much cooler).
Change Badger to wolverine or honey badger. Even just adding the touch of a more descriptive name will make it more evocative.
Vampire deer can take the deer stat block but add a bite attack from a wolf
Orangutans as the Ape
you can also screw with the animal a little with your dms permission. Say you came from a more mythical background? You can change colors, noises or even the entire animal, like using the Bear stat block as a huge armadillo.
So similar to what you mentioned my druid uses the panther stat block but shifts into a Mountain Lion which fits better into his background. Other reflavourings I have used is to specify the kind of spiders I am shifting into. For instance my wolf shape is actually a white wolf which hunted him as a boy, my hawk shape is specifically a red-tailed hawk, and my owl is a brown barn owl. Some of my other shapes have unique scars, colorings etc. It is all aligned with the character backstory.

Huge armadillo sounds cool, I hadn’t thought of changing it completely like that

Playing a Moon Druid / Bear Totem Barbarian Multiclass. With a very creative and cooperative DM, all my Elemental Wildshapes are in Bear Form.
