So if a druid wild shapes into an animal and then eats a meal, is the druid full? and if so, that means a druid could wild shape into a fly or small bird and barely have to eat. My thoughts on this would be to say the druid has to eat the same amount in or out of wild shape, but how would you do it?
There's also the complication that if you wild-shape into a creature that can swallow an enemy, then I believe if you transform back then anything you ate is disgorged first, i.e- only the creature you transformed into changes back, anything you ate or wore while wild-shaped is left behind.
On that basis, eating anything in wild-shape would provide you with no sustenance at all; a DM is of course free to rule differently for RP, since these are mostly combat considerations, but I think you definitely still need an equivalent to a full portion of rations per day as a Medium creature.
My understanding is that only applies to swalling a creatue that is still alive when the druid changes back. This is necessary for balancing reasons (Action swallow the medium sized BBEG, Bonus action revert to normal form would otherwise cause the Druid to explode as a creature as big as him is inside him or be an instant win for the party)
Having something in your stomach that is well digested causes no such issues, when a druid goes into wild shape he does not regurgitate his last meal (at least not in any games I have played) so I see no reason why it happens when he returns from wild shape. I would go with the daily food intake being enough to keep him in his normal form unless it is a level 20 druid trhat spends all day in wild shape form.

Thing is, none of this is covered in RAW at all (either way); the Wildshape feature only talks about equipment you had in normal form.
On that basis though the general assumption is usually that the transformation is between what you were, and what you became only, so anything you add to the wildshape can't change back with you. This avoids issues for example if a halfling turns into a bear, eats a full meal as a bear then transforms back into a creature that physically cannot hold that amount of food without their stomach exploding.
Ultimately it's a magical process, so you can always hand wave it however you want as "it's magic, so it's fine".
But I definitely think that at the very least if at any point during a day you're a medium creature you need to eat enough food for a creature of that size to still count as fed that day (a DM could even argue more, as wildshaping has to tucker you out at least a little bit), but on that basis if you ate more you could end up overfed though I don't think there are rules for that normally.
Until you are high level. You are going to be spending more time in your normal form than you are in an animal form to my recollection since I want to say in 5e it's number of hours equal to half your character level and specifically states rounded down.
Since this is the case I think it's best to assume that you have to consume the adequate amount of food for your normal form to be able to subsist. Something like ring of Nourishment or good berries not withstanding. Though be careful with good berries and a pain in the butt dm or you might find yourself walking into an anti-magic room and suddenly starving despite the fact they are an excellent spell utility way of getting around carrying around rations.
RAW Druids have no special abilites in gather food, though a high wisdom will help with survival checks. Goodberry gets round the issue however even if the party are crossing a desert with no food or water to forage.
When a hunger comes along You must Goodberry it Before the starving sits out too long You must Goodberry it When your appetite is going wrong You must Goodberry it

I'd say that a druid's total daily calorie requirement isn't changed by spending a few hours in Wild Shape.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Druids can live off the land don’t forget
so long as they’re in nature they can gather food
