Recently I have been dreaming of a magically charged bruiser for the campaign I’m in. After a bit of digging I’ve found the eldritch knight on dndB and the battlemage on a home brew site (link at bottom). To understand my dnd knowledge, I’ve started with 5e and haven’t grasped out from there, assume beginner in experience.
After reading up on the EK from how-to’s to others’ comments and opinions after playing the subclass, the EK sounds less like a spell slinging hammer smash rather a situational self buffer. That’s where the BM caught my interest. Starts out a bit like a EK however it has a little more magic capabilities with a point system, that reminds me of a monk’s qi, to offer the use of class/subclass abilities outside of the spell system. Being a bit squishier by focusing STR/INT rather then CON seems like a decent trade off.
I’ve been pushing through a bit of comparison between the two as well as other characters I’ve seen played but my knowledge from experience is low and can not tell if the scales are balanced or if my curiosity has blinded me from a glaring problem. If this sounds similar to previous edition’s class, a home brewed class you’ve used or if someone knows how to balance the scales, please let me know. Thank you for your knowledge and advice. Keep rolling.
For some reason, the quick click for the link won’t take the parentheses and causes it to go to a search page for battlemage on the other site. Not sure how to fix.
There's a lot of Battlemage links there - do you mean the full class, or the fighter subclass?
Personally, I tend to avoid dandwiki as I find a lot of the stuff is just dumb broken in one direction or another. I'm sure there's good stuff on there, but the majority is not - at least as far as I've seen.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
If this is your first time playing a warrior mage, I would avoid dandwiki. The Eldritch Knight is a better choice, but if you are looking for a more spell-slinging character, then I would be a War Mage. Other good choices are Bladesingers (TCE version is much better then SCAG's), Valor Bards, or Hexblade Warlocks. Hexblades and War Mages are found in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Bladesingers are found in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (you can get it in SCAG too, but that version is severely underpowered).
