The only time a shortbow is better than a longbow is if your character is small.
Since you have a feat in firearms I think you should try to get a firearm and not invest in either bows or crossbows. If you want a bowman I would take a different feat, probably one that gives you a +1 in dexterity.
The updated ranger from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. It has alternate choices for the ranger class abilities. Many of them can be more broadly useful than the PHB versions, though there are plenty of people who prefer the PHB options.
Still working out a few kinks. Just wanted to know is the short bow better or the longbow? Should I also invest in crossbows?
