So, one of my players has a level 5 Elf Champion Fighter with Shield Master. The Elf species gives her one cantrip, and since I don't know much about cantrips for Fighters, what would be a good choice dealing damage?
Note that there are two Fighters in the Party, and they like the idea of knocking an enemy prone and then going nova with Action Surge.
I realize a different subclass would likely be more optimal, but she's going to stick with Champion for various reasons.

Thanks!
I'd say booming blade. It does less damage than extra attack, but the control from it is quite valuable by encouraging enemies to stay in place
There are no good damage options if your elf dumped intelligence. the only other conceivable option is to take booming blade, but it's practically a worse option than taking the attack action every time. Their best bet is to take a cantrip for utility. Light or Mage Hand are good options.
Any ranged cantrip could be fun, and give an option when enemies are too far away to attack otherwise. Fire bolt especially has the added utility of starting fires.
Chill Touch is also a neat one for getting around the need for vision, and also has good range and bonus abilities.
Booming blade isn’t idea for a fighter, but it does have a certain kind of anime swordsman vibe to it that can be fun.
+1 to cgarcio on a utility cantrip. Prestidigitation is endlessly useful, also mending. And depending on the campaign, mold earth and shape water can be great.
Presditdigitation works wonders! Both in combat and out of combat. Flavoring food, warming clothes. Snuffing out pesky lights that might reveal your location! I recommend this video by chance on some great uses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICq1ysr5GJM

Thank you all very much! A utility cantrip sounds like the way to go. I'll suggest Prestidigitation.
