the most OP fighter is easily an elf samurai archer with elven accuracy and sharp shooter. Full 20 levels, purebred. As for attunable magic items, we're looking at an oathbow, belt of giant strength, and the third slot is your choice but good mentions are boots of flying, archery bracers for min-maxing ranged damage, or a good melee weapon like blackrazor. There's also other good utility item options like the cape of the mountebank, or the rod of security, but it's all up to personal taste. After taking the afformentioned feats, and getting dex to 20, you should also look at building the fighter with the Lucky feat and Alert feat. I personally built mine with tough and GWM on top of that.
But seriously, with this build you get:
free proficiency with WIS saves (and advantage for charm saves)
top tier single target damage, both sustain and burst, both via melee or ranged
at-will advantage
great survivability with solid saving throws and the ability to re-roll multiple times via indomitable and lucky
This is THE build for being one tough cookie on the battlefield.
Assuming that your enemy has AC 22 (because ancient red dragon), and you take that build...
Since obviously we can increase all stats to max (up up up), each attack gives us...
a +18 to hit, so minimum 4 to hit the ancient dragon. This is approximately a 4/5 chance to hit the ancient dragon, and average damage is 1d10(heavy crossbow) + 10(dex) + 2(bracers) + 3d6(oathbow)=5.5+10+2+10.5=28 damage per attack. Of course, we also need to multiply by 4/5 to make up for when the bow misses for approximately 22.5 damage an attack.
But what if you have advantage?
If you have advantage, then you can forget about multiplying by the fraction more or less.
22.5, or even 28 doesn't sound like much, but that's per attack. Fighters get 4 attacks a round, or 8 with action surge(don't forget to take crossbow master). That means
90 damage on an average round without advantage
129 damage on advantage 4 attacks, assuming you convert an advantage into two non-advantage.. JUST KIDDING!
and double that damage above for action surge. Ouch! Plus, if you insert some arrows of slaying, then the dragon has a 2/5 chance to take an extra 33 damage on average per arrow. Times 8, that's, uh...
*whisper* 264 damage, then add the 258 from normal damage, for a total of 522 damage.

yes, but is it really worth the penalty? a -5 to hit is a pretty big deal, since it increases what you need to a 8 and only gives you a +10 to damage.
Well, calculators would normally say it's a good idea, but if we're capable of downing an ancient red dragon without it given the additional stuff you listed then it's not worth using.
If it's arcane archer, you get two shots of insane damage per rest, but between Fighting Spirit, Elegant Courtier, and Rapid Strike, Samurai is just better.
arcane archer's not bad. I mean, it uses the fighter chassis, which is excellent to begin with. AA offers more than samurai in the way of some battlefield control, which can be significant. For example, you get to straight up banish creatures for a turn as AA. that sort of thing is incredibly valuable and potentially can change the tide of a fight instantly. There's caveats, of course, such as your DC being based on INT but it is an option. Grasping arrow works really great with teams that are capable of forced movement.
Samurai, of course, is just top tier when it comes to performing damage. To me, Samurai is the most fighter-y fighter. So simple, so resilient, yet so strong. But just because nothing beats samurai at damage, it doesn't mean the other classes aren't worth looking at. End of the day, so long as you build right and make smart decisions in game, you can play any old subclass you want and still perform fantastically well. Yes, even Purple Dragon Knight can look fantastic if you build it how I would. So, play whatever you want.

Hi guys,
I'm a new user and I only have Basic Rules sourcebook. I made a fighter character:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/92343029
So basically I tried to make them as overpowered as possible, using only what I know and what I can add with the Basic Rules content.
Any ideas to make it even more OP?
*I chose fighter because it seemed the easiest to make overpowered.
hmmm...
I mean, like, maybe make the greatsword a longsword since great is two handed.

Oh, no. I'm an idiot.
Make it a sorlock. Sorcerer10, Warlock10, take short rest, convert spell slots into sorcery points, rinse and repeat.

What are some examples of good magic items to use as a sorlock?
I think it’s called Archmage Cloak, I’d also recommend Wand +3

It’s not that bad
Yes, it's not bad, but at higher levels with insane damage and low chances of missing, I think that it's better to not take the penalty.

What if it was Arcane Archer instead of Samurai?

What about Ever-Ready Shot? regain 1 use when rolling initiative if none left. Probably still not enough to justify using the subclass, right?
There's a similar feature with fighting spirit.

I think Arcane Archer is much more focused on archery and has more versatile options depending on what kind of enemy you're facing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm don't play much but I do study the game a lot.
