Asking about the new PHB version of the Subclass, not sure if this is the right place.
New EK can replace one of it's Extra Attacks with a cantrip. The Cantrip "Green Flame Blade" when used at Level 5 literally does a normal weapon attack but with an added 1d8 of Fire Damage on hit.
Doesn't this mean by using this cantrip you're not actually giving up an attack with your weapon, you're just getting a free 1d8 of damage plus some damage on a second nearby enemy?
I know that's not a crazy amount of extra damage, but it just seems funny that you can replace a weapon attack with a slightly better weapon attack if you want to, whenever you want to. Not sure if I'm understanding the new mechanic though.
That doesn't mean it's not usable though. Plenty of subclasses, feats, and spells are not in the new book but that doesn't mean they don't exist and can't be used anymore. If they have been changed by the new book then RAW you should use the new version, otherwise I don't see a problem using them.
Use the new true strike cantrip instead of green-flame blade and the "not in 2024 PHB" argument vanishes. Note that true strike would use the caster stat instead of strength or dexterity for the attack so accuracy and damage bonus might be affected.
Crawford has repeatedly said that anything not replaced in 2024 is backward compatible. That means you could use the 2024 fighter chassis with the Rune Knight from Tasha's (for example). And you can also use Booming Blade/Green Flame Blade in the same way. That is, unless you have a curmudgeon of a DM.
OC if the table is using GFB then yes, the EK or valor bard can use it as a cantrip in place of an attack. True strike is an alternative for those tables who don't use GFB. ;-)

Yes. Its the correct interpretation. Without that feature your options are:
- use the Attack action to attack 2 times with extra attack. (Or once if you don't have extra attack)
- Or use the Magic action to attack only 1 time with the Cantrip.
The feature gives you the option mix and match your attacks with cantrips (only one), so the extra dmg with the attack cantrips is a straight plus. Not everyone can do that.
Yes, if your DM allows you to use old content. That's not a guarantee.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
This feature is the same as the Bladesinger, and is an immense boon for the EK. Cantrips scale with level so will get better. Later on however the improved war magic is not as good...2 actions for a level 1 or 2 spell? I guess this could allow to you add a defensive spell but most attack spells at that level aren't use full by the time this comes on (which btw - the level for this is not given in DND beyond yet, and also this class is not available in DND beyond yet...).

Your interpretation is correct. However, green flame blade isn't a 2024 spell.

Well it's a garbage argument anyway, but yeah that's an option to. Not really the point of the original post though.
