I was already planning a Fighter 1/Celestial Patron Warlock 19 build when I realized the Banneret fighter also uses Charisma. So, I was curious how such a milticlass could work (if it is actually worth it at all.)
My current plan is to start with Fighter 1-5, then Warlock 1-14 and finish with fighter 6 for the epic boon.
What level would you actually be playing at? If you start mid tier, you may want to go to fighter 6 to grab the ASI for an ability boost. If you start higher then it probably does not matter and you can try to game the system to get that boon.
This is actually a backup character. Our canpaign is currently at level 9, so it would be a Banneret 5/Celestial 4 split, letting me max out my Charisma as the primary stat.
is it really that big of a deal to put off my second ASI/Feat by5 levels (one more than average)? The thing is if i don’t delay it, I can’t get my epic boon at all, as my last ASI/Feat is a level before eligibility.
You are at level 9. Is it a big deal to wait another 10 levels in the hope of getting a boon?
Considering this character isn't quite half way there, maybe it is a big deal. If you get ASI = +2 That can be huge, as either one ability gives a +1 bonus or with two odd numbered you can get both to boost up by a +1.
That boost helps saving throws and skill checks and maybe to hit rolls or even damage. I guarantee that boost will be used several times for the next few levels, let alone for an additional 10 levels.
If you decide on a feat, again I bet that feat will be useful many, many times in the next 10 levels.
What is the chance of getting your character killed? if they get killed, I would even bet that you might have avoided that death but having the ASI/Feat addition.
If you wait until level 19, how guaranteed are you that you will play until level 19? How many months or even years will it take you to slog through an additional 10 levels? Once you hit level 19, how much longer will you play that character?
This is not even about short term gratification versus long term. If you have a 9th level and you play the character encounter by encounter until it reaches 19, you will have missed a lot of uses of that ASI boost. Because how long will you play after achieving 19th level, assuming you even get that far?
Basically it is great to have a long term plan, but that plan should never be at the expense of day to day survival. You ASI/Feat choice does affect your next session and every session after that one.
Setting aside the level 19-30 part. You’ll be getting the low-level fighter stuff, which is good. Though the only power they have that actually uses cha is at level 10, and the only banneret stuff you’ll get is level 3. The first two abilities, a couple languages and a skill proficiency, will be campaign dependent on how useful they are. Are you traveling a lot that you’ll get use of extra languages? Is there a skill that someone else in the party doesn’t have already that will let you fill that hole?
The third is a bit of free healing, but you’ll be stuck at a d4+5 hp. It’s a small number and while it’s better than a poke in the eye, it’s not all that useful. It’s real healing, not thp, so you can help someone get up if they’ve dropped, which is good. But it’s not really something you can use very tactically. If you need to use your second wind, usually you just do it. You’re not going to wait until you can move closer to another party member do it so they can get half a healing word if hp.

Ah i see. I guess I should either go 10/10 or back to 1/19. Let me see what 10/10 looks like out of curiosity, but I’m already having doubts. Not getting level 11 in Fighter or 12 in Warlock means no third attack. Plus I really wanted the level 14 Celestial Warlock ability.
It was an interesting idea, but I might have to scrap it.
Thanks for your feedback.

I guess I see your logic. I’ll have to decide which feat to feat/asi to go with for my build though.
I think this defeats the purpose, but would there be any benefit in going Banneret 4/ Celestial 16? I wouldn’t think so, as it puts off extra attack.
Otherwise, I need to come up with another ASI/Feat. I could either do two +1 Constitution feats or add in another +2 ASI.
