So I'm just starting a Tomb of Annihilation campaign. The character is currently a level 1 fighter with the following stats (we had a high-powered draft for ability generation:
STR 18 Dex 13 COn 16 INT 14 WIS (who cares?) CHA 9
Here's the limitations that I am sticking with, no matter what: - Will multiclass as a wizard at some point - Heavy weapon fighting style (the one that rerolls 1 and 2's) - Heavy Armor mastery feat (From vhuman) - STR based.
Builds under consideration, out to level 11:
1) EK7/Wiz4
EK, 1-7
Wizard, 8-11
--> Basic idea is to get to Warmagic ASAP and then supplement casting afterwards with more slots and rituals. The level 8-11 EK improvements feel kinda lackluster in comparison)
2) Battlemaster 7 / Wiz4
Level 1 fighter
Wizard 2-5 (To get to 2nd level spells and ASI 1 early)
Fighter (BM) 6-11
Possibly swap the last level of BM for 5th level wizard. This one seems more fun IF I can survive theearly wizard levels and make it to BM. Abjuration or Arcane Deflection, along with Heavy Armor Mastery, will probably help. Maneuvers are probably underpowered compared to EK, but I love the flavor.
Are you planning on using Booming Blade and/or Green-Flame Blade? If so, I'd take 1 level of wizard after your first level of fighter to pick up the spells.
Otherwise, either build looks fine. I prefer the EK build more though because of War Magic.
After two sessions, we're already at level three (although I have not decided what level 3 will be)
I will probably go EK through 7 and then Wiz. Warmagic (EK ability) looks very good. And yes, either build will get damage from the SCAG cantrips. But you can get them at Fighter 3 (EK).
OTOH, this is an option
1-4 EK (to get an ASI) 5-6 Wiz (for Warmage. Abjuror is a waste on this build) 7 - 9 EK (Multiattack + ASI 2 + Warmagic) 10-11 Wiz (Slots and known spells)

I think that last option is fine. You should be able to tell by level 5 how much you would value Extra Attack vs. delaying it a couple of levels.
