I noticed that the PHB said that monk weapons had to be lacking the versatile feature and had to be a simple weapon. I noticed that the quarterstaff could be remodeled as a kung-fu bamboo stick, but it is a versatile weapon, so I came up with this:
Any simple weapon that is deemed appropriate by the DM can be a monk weapon. (+ Shortsword)

Monk weapons do not have to be lacking the versatile property. Just heavy or special. Quarterstaff works RAW one handed or two handed versatile
