Okay, so I haven't played the Ascendant Dragon Monk yet, but I will agree with the masses that it is a bit underwhelming. With that being said, I have put together what I think will be a fun build by going with a Kobold. This character, Javi, will end up being the envy of the entire Kobold clan as he obtains actual dragon abilities. Pack Tactics should work good with a monk build as long as there are other melee PCs in the group.
But yeah, I am looking forward to playing this character in a one-shot soon and if anything else, I do a lot of DMing, so I could make this build a villain or a boss-battle among kobolds someday. It would definitely be entertaining.
If anyone wants to see my level-by-level character build for this on D&D Beyond, here's a video for ya! Cheers!

Thanks agree it looks very underwhelming, anther thread did a comparison with 4E monk Dragon monk seems to be little better but no where close to my top 3 subclasses
Top 3 subclasses? Nope, not in mine either. Not even close.
With regards to a PC for a campaign, I'm picking something else. But if I get the chance to play this Kobold Ascendant Dragon Monk in a one shot or have him as a big bad in my game... I'm gonna do it! lol.

I tried the UA version, and with the changes in the final version I'd say Ascendant Dragon Monk is pretty much squarely in the middle of the pack for Monk sub-classes.
I wouldn't say it's bad, it gives you a decent amount of anti-horde damage, and the resistance aura is great despite the short range. My main issue with it is that the fear aura is very "meh" (should be an instantaneous area effect) and the damage burst added to the aura is just weirdly "meh" as well, since it's basically pointless on the resistance aura, and even on the fear aura it's not that good.
Breath weapon and flight are both great abilities though, and if it fits the theme you want to play as I think the sub class will still be fun.

I’m looking for first impressions from a player. Good, bad and ugly.
Silence speaks volumes
If dragon monk is a better fit in the party but the shadow monk is such a stronger class. So my dilemma is stay shadow or switch to dragon monk
