Hello! This is my first post in the forums. I just created a Monk Barbarian, creating a PC inspired in Rock Lee (naruto series character). My aim was to make a grappling monk.
My stats are: STR 14 DEX 16 CON 16 INT 10 WIS 14 CHA 10.
I made the first level of barbarian to get the extra HP and barbarian unarmored defence, so I can invest on constitution to get more HP and AC. What I'm not sure of is what subclass of monk should I choose. I've been toying with the idea of taking the mobile feat, but for a monk not maxing his main stats that would be costly. Then there's the prodigy feat that would gain me expertise on athletics, and boost my grappling prowess. The thing is I wanted to try the way of the drunken master, but the way of the open hand gives me more powers to use with my flurry of blows. My main use of ki will be the flurry of blows, and I want to take the best mileage as I can. I also want to ask you if 14 wis is enough for the skills that force an enemy to make a saving throw.
Any help you can give me to better develop my character will be appreciated.
Up front I would lower CON a little and up the WIS, Way of Open Hand is most combat efficient, Prodigy feat for Athletics expertise is awesome, and cool build man!
I just played my Monk Barbarian the other day.
Barbarian 1 Monk 5, Human var. (Prodigy feat, Athletics expertise). Tackle grapple heaven.
It plays like Connor McGregor hahaha. He used Ki mostly for Stunning Stikes to disable and get those crtis rolling while the target is knocked prone (maybe even grappled), and for utility / roleplay. Figured that the monk chasis on its own coupled with Barbarian rage is plenty fun and efficient enough as a striker in the front lines. I'd say go with the flavor that you find "coolest" for the subclass. Sometimes its way more satisfying to walk on water, drain a submerged lair, fly, or form rock handholds while climbing a cliff face than stacking on more combat mechanics to an already capable build. Combat, Exploration, and Roleplay! :P
That said, if the game is just straight up fighting then, yeah man, way of the open hand is hands down the most combat efficient monk sublcass.
Thanks! I asked a long time ago, I thought my thread was uninteresting as nobody had answered.
So, you would make the first level Monk, so you could rely more on Wis than Con? That was one of my dilemmas making this build. More wis improved stunning strike, and more con helped with HP and general suvivavility.
As for my PC, he died in his first adventure. So sad, really. I had high hopes for him. Back to the old drawing board, I guess.
