I'm still pretty new to d&d and I've made a way of shadow monk for my first 5e campaign. Looking forward at the feats I saw empty body. Invisibility is always good, but then I saw the part about astral projection. I was wondering about the utility of this ability.
My understanding of the astral plane is it's used to get to other planes. So as far as I can tell astral projection puts me in a random spot on the astral plane, all the exits are in random spots, and lead to random spots on the destination plane as well.
So I guess I'm asking when I would use this, or maybe a better explanation as to how the astral plane works.
The astral projection part of the ability, you probably won't use very often, but the invisibility is awesome! The astral plane and other planes are described in the Dungeon Master's Guide but like everything else in that book, its suggestions and descriptions that the DM needs to flesh out. So you should talk to your DM about how the astral plane works in their particular game.
Generally, traveling to the astral plane involves a fair amount of risk, including leaving your physical body behind and potentially vulnerable, you're only going to want to go there for a reason - most likely quest related. It can be a way to reach other planes, since, you are correct, there are gates there, but without some sort of way to navigate or find the right gate...not the most inviting or interesting place to be.
MToF is coming out next week and will flesh out the Astral plane a little more. At the very least part of the included adventure takes place there aboard a Gith ship.
