So I have a monk/ranger multiclass who has a homebrewed version of a double-bladed scimitar (it's a quarterstaff with 2 crescent moon-shaped blades at the end. we've been using 2d4 as the base damage lately though it was once 1d8). I tried using the Dedicated Weapon optional feature on it in DnD beyond but it wouldn't let me because double-bladed scimitars have the special property.
But then I realized...is there even a point to labeling this as a monk weapon? What I'm seeing is monk weapons get 3 benefits:
Monk weapons let you use dex instead of strength, but the double-bladed scimitar is finesse so uses dex anway. And I'm proficient with it because of martial weapon proficiency on ranger.
Monk weapons let you use d4/d6/d8/d10 according to martial arts column, but the base 2d4 of the double bladed is better until getting 1d10 at level 17 (which I'll never get to on this multiclass)
Monk weapons let you use an unarmed attack as a bonus action after you use an Attack action. But...I can just use one ki point and cast flurry of blows regardless of monk weapon or non-monk weapon, can't I? I rarely run out of ki points in my campaign.
So I guess the only thing I'd lose by NOT having this be a monk weapon in dnd beyond is the ability to make a bonus action unarmed attack with no ki? Am I reading this right?
Of course, if you want to keep the ability to make a bonus action unarmed attack with no ki, and your DM is cool and let's you designate this thing as a Monk weapon (based on the homebrew description, it sounds like they would be cool with that...), just add "Monk Weapon" under the notes section for the weapon, and do the bonus action unarmed attack when you want to. I's not like you need to turn anything on in D&D Beyond to be able to just roll a bonus action attack.

Yes, I agree with your reading.

Nice homebrew design, btw!
Thank you!
