My group is starting Waterdeep Dragon Heist soon (and Mad Mage after that), and I am rolling a Shadow monk.
Trying to figure out when is the best time to take that Warlock dip (only 2 levels, for Devils Sight + 1 other TBD).
If I did it early on, I could see Mask of Many faces coming in quite handy for DH. I'm tempted to get the dip out of the way, so I can be all set up for Mad Mage.
I could also wait until DH is over (and presumably be monk 5), then do the dip and grab Devil Sight and something more appropriate for a dungeon crawl.
Also, what Patron do you think would be most appropriate for a monk just taking a Warlock 2 dip?
I think patron wise it would depend how you flavoured your monk.
So my monk was trained in the shadowfell after accidently falling through a portal. This means that I've I was to take some warlock levels that undying wouldn't sit right because he was trained and mostly raised in a monastery dedicated to the raven queen.
So I think that you should think about how your monk became a monk...if it was through training at a religious monastery then maybe celestial. Or maybe they just did a lot of martial arts training and as such some other aspect of their background could come in to play.
If you want simple mechanics then I personally think that Hexblade works well when multiclassing with a martial class.
Dragon Heist is a very short campaign. It's lvl 1-5. Hopefully you're planning on continuing afterward, but it means using up 2 levels in Warlock will have a significant impact on the character.
Personally I think you should do.
1: Monk 2: Warlock 3: Warlock 4: Monk 5: Monk
This will delay your Monk Movement, Ki Points, Monastic Tradition, and Deflect Missiles but you'll already have Martial Art and Unarmored Movement. You'll be getting you Otherworldly Patron, Pact Magic, and Eldritch Invocations.
I personally would avoid Eldritch Blast as a cantrip because it's going to make you MAD.
a Monk needs Dex, Wis, and Con and the Warlock needs Cha. Pick your limited 2 cantrips for utility instead of damage because you do have dex weapons
I am currently setting up to do a similar build as a black dragonborn, so I may lurk your post here some.
I do support getting your two levels of warlock out of the way quickly, but also would like to suggest a third later on, for darkness as a spell slow. To save ki points for flurries, cause hex + flurry is strong damage.
I'm doing a shadow monk/warlock build. I'm doing it for storyline mainly so the shadow entity bonds itself to my monk while he's shadow stepping. in that way i'm leaving the first warlock dip to level 7, once shadow step is well used and some of the aspects of shadow have been worked.
I think the devil's sight will work well with the darkness cast of the way of shadow and the devils tongue will be cool too.
