Since our monk is a lizardfolk, he has big scary teeth, bigger scarier claws and a really muscular tail. I've asked him about the tail already, and he told me that its not prehensile. He can't manipulate it at will (like say Nightcrawler) Do you think I should talk to him about having alternate or extra attack options for biting and or slicing with claws?
NOTE! I may talk to him later after he gains a few levels about how he'd feel about having a more lizardlike tail. That way if it gets damaged he can safely remove it from his body.
If he's ok with that, do you think it would grow back the same or like broken bones? (That is it grows back denser and more resistant to damage like human bone)
I got a great big laugh out of him when I told him that when he's meditating, he flits his tongue around like a snake, I guess he imagined it after I said that.
Lizardfolk already have a bite melee attack that normally does 1d6+Str. Perhaps make it a "monk weapon" for him that would scale with the martial arts die and allow him to use dex instead of strength?
Lizardfolk Bite: "Your fanged maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike."
Monk: "You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons."
Lizardfolk get 1d6+Str/Dex for unarmed attacks at lvl 1, everyone else has to wait for 5th lvl. In addition remember the Lizardfolk still gets Hungry Jaws, and so can bite to gain Temp HP in combat.
Unarmed attacks aren't just punches or kicks... it's whatever. tail slaps, headbutts, knees, etc... So the player can wire-fu up their attacks all they want.
That said if you want to make the lizardfolk monk cooler I don't think the player will mind.
Balance wise if you want the tail to be cooler, make a cool Lizardfolk Feat.

This. I slap a lot of folks with my tail as a Kensei Monk on a flurry. I always imagine everyone focusing on the battle axe and they whomped out of nowhere with a spin.

...Ehhh, whatever. It was a dumb idea anyways

It already does that Saute_Monkey,
