A Way of the Shadow monk is capable of teleporting up to 60 ft from "shadow" to "shadow" if they are in dim light or darkness. Does this mean if the monk were carrying an object, such as an umbrella, which cast a shadow directly beneath them, they could use said shadow as a starting point? That is to say, assuming they do not take the object with them when they teleport, is a carried object capable of producing "dim light" ?

I'm not sure about an umbrella in broad daylight or with multiple light sources (the area may still be considered brightly lit even if not directly), but I can definitely see a blanket or cloak working, and I am going to try this if I ever run a shadow monk (on my wish list).
"I wrap the cloak around me so I am completely covered except a tiny hole to peek through. The cloak drops to the ground empty." So ninja.
I myself would like to be a bit silly and have my character wear a really big hat (like a comically-sized sombrero) that he could teleport out from under

I could not help but imagine a cartoon were a character pulls a hat down over their entire body.
Its up to your DM to say yes or no to it. My take would be no because your holding the umbrella and its not in dimlight. Now if you tossed it up and were still 100% in the shadow I would say yea. Your sword doesn't drop from your grasp when you teleport in shadows so why would anything else you would be wearing not tele with you?

Oooh, now I want to make a magic initiate(druid) shadow monk. Use control flames to drop a light source then teleport
